mares wanted the fight more and fought as if he was the challenger. moreno just tried his best not to get hit with little urgency in his side. the kd was valid but the deduction was not. i have no problem with mares winning.

Santa Cruz would lose to Moreno just cause of the weight and the fact he gets hit too much.

He gets hit a bit, but Zaleta's a pretty good fighter with good compact punches. LSC defended himself reasonably well in the pocket, especially given that he was pressing forward the whole time.

i was thinking about moreno. anyone who has high work rate who doesn't get tired would give him problems. sort of like a mini-margarito.

if his chin is as solid as his attack, then in a few more fights, yes.

I don't see him wanting to fight Moreno at 118 too big too long and too classy. Moreno boxed the wrong fight today at a higher weight and still showed that he could beat Mares for some of the fight. I don't see Moreno fighting the same way at 118

I think Santa Cruz has a better set of skills than Margo, though it remains to be seen how he would fare when faced with a fighter with Moreno's skill and stamina. Still, if Mares could trouble him with pressure, than Santa Cruz certainly could do the same because that's something he uses extremely well in his fights.

Be interesting to see whether Mares landed more low blows tonight than he did against Agbeko. A real ref would have DQ'd him. Moreno wears his trunks low and Mares still was low multiple times in every round.

yes we still don't know how far up in level would santa cruz takes his current form. my guess is he is still not on that level of mares and needs more seasoning. no need to rush, how old is the kid?

I'm watching the Santa Cruz fight now. He continues to impress. Solid, solid fighter.

He's 24, so he's still got a bit of time to develop and refine his attack.

I scored the fight for Mares, 10-2 rounds, 118-108 points. I think it was the 7th and 8th rounds that I gave Moreno. Mares won most of the rounds on effective aggression, which contrasted with Moreno being on his bike and throwing occasional potshots that landed but only rarely made Mares take notice. The fouling took a lot away from the fight, and I think the height difference between the two, and Moreno's awkward style, contributed to a lot of the low blows Mares threw (though not as blatant as first Agbeko fight). Still, it seems clear that any Moreno opponent should try to get a referee with a history of zero tolerance for low blows.
