I thought Murray did well against Sturm, perhaps because I was expecting him to get badly beaten, stepping up so far in class in one fell swoop... but I still thought he was soundly beaten, 8-4 ish. Sturm landed the harder, more significant shots throughout the fight. Murray shined Sturm's gloves up good and proper, but it didn't show me anything that convinced me he's world class. Martinez would waste him. For a stacked division 160 is turd at the minute. Nobody fighting each other at all hardly.
Look how much we learn when the touted prospects fight each other. HNDNJ Vs Quillin, Pirog Vs Jacobs for a few recentish examples. Golovkin Vs Pirog, Geale Vs Quillin. Winners both get a chance at Sergio. Bish bash bosh ;-)
I disagree we've had a great year or so at 160 after ages of garbage. GGG/Proska Macklin/Martinez Barker/Martinez Chavez/Martinez Murray/Sturm Macklin/Sturm Geale/Sturm Quillin/N'Jam And wasn't Pirog meant to be fighting GGG but got pulled out. Not bad compared to how it had been not long before.
Sergio wants to fight at home before rematching Chavez Jr. At 37 he's not interested in dangerous challengers like GGG, just wants to cash out before retirement.
With 'modern conditioning' and a late start to the game and only a couple of years of fighting consistently good opposition, and still not too regularly, I don't give him a free pass for this.
hes a lightweight mate, too much of a jump for me. theres always "fake" carlos molina that fights at light middle though, hes a decent operator
I think Murray might surprise a few people, not saying I think he'll win but he'll give it a right good go. He's ranked number 3 with the WBC so if this is just a stay busy fight before a Chavez rematch perhaps it's the best and easiest that could have been made with schedule conflicts etc
Yeah IIRC he was admiring his work, walk away. I think maybe he was told that if you look in control it may give impression you are. But he just didn't up it when needed. Shame cos Sturm was there to be beaten by him that night. I think i probably worded it wrong, Not big who ha but some do rate him a little to high. Sturm was there for taking, He gave a very good account of himself but he didn't up the ante when needed. Maybe inexperience or maybe fear of the moment?. Decent fighter mind you, still developing himself.
Wow, Hatton prom. pulled this one out the bag! Murray's on the Hatton undercard, so hopefully comes through unscaved, but he's going to get blasted out!
I think you hit the nail on the head when you put inexperience, I think he got in the position of thinking he could win it and shat himself and thought what do I do now, go on the offensive or go defensive. He has come along way from winning that prizefighter that was the undercard to a big american fight which escapes me at the moment.
