Has the heavyweight division ever sucked as much as today?

I will wager you that in all of those eras, somebody worse than Haye hit the top 4 at some point.

 

Well, Haye would probably find a way to get himself noticed in any era.

 

I can't take David Haye too seriously as a heavyweight contender.
An excellent self-promoter, he's really not much of a fighter.
Chambers, Brock, Chagaev, Peter were probably all better challengers for Wlad.

Both times, i would say.
Peter was in decent shape against Wlad both times, but was in poor shape for the Vitali fight.

 

not a chance, a guy with his speed, power and charisma would always be, at worst, a notable contender.

The further back in history we go the better his chances as the top level heavyweights were closer to his size.

I can't think of a single decade when every one of the ranked contenders would be high enough quality to keep Haye off the list.

 

well he unified the cw division and then beat barret, valuez and ruiz plus he's beaten chisora in better fashion than anyone else.

Chambers could rank above him because he has one of the strongest hw resumes out there today, he's just too light hitting. Chagaev did what Haye did but to better versions.

Peter is not a better challenge, Haye would knock him out, same with Brock.

 

Been studying hwt boxing since 1970. I have never seen the division in such poor shape. Aside from this boxing is in the worst shape I have ever seen It by far. So much so I have lost my great interest in the sport.

Good lord. This sentiment has been expressed ad nauseum going back to the beginning of the 20TH century. The fact that those regurgitating it don't realize it is the oldest line in the sport shocks me.

The sport is doing just fine. The talent is A level in all divisions.

 

Only a true novice would say a world where we can have 5 champions in each division and no lay person can tell you who is the true champion a great era for the sport.

 

No lay person, perhaps, where you come from. But in other countries they sure as hell can. And the sporting market at large is much more competitive with football, American football, basketball, golf, motor sports and MMA all chipping away at the strangle hold that, at least in the US, boxing and baseball once held.

In regards to the heavies, I would rather have 3 world champions than Braddock, Carnera, Burns, Spinks or Willard...

Janitor has always been a fan of Haye's speed and power. I agree with him.
