This happened with any champion while they were active.

People listed Holmes' flaws, they never took Holyfield seriously, they despised Lewis -- while they were active. The picture turns 180 degrees a couple years after they retire.

Technically Holyfield is still active but that's beside the point.

Of course it happens with any champion, its human nature to find flaws in the best. But it happens more to fighters with rabid fanbases who (not all) overrate and have no clue what they're talking about. Klitschko fans think their men are being singled out and denied a fair shake out of some sort of personal resentment. Truth is this has happened with Pac, Floyd, Trinidad, Oscar, RJJ and plenty of other fighters who's followings become fanatical instead of just fans. For me personaly, if you tell me someone is the greatest without thoroughly mapping out why and understanding the history of what you're talking about, I'm going to call you on it. If you still can't back it up and are insistant about being right Im going to let you know about it over and over. You see it's not Wlad being denied his due, I believe he gets that and will continue to in the future as you've pointed out, it's his fans (again, not all of them) insistence on being idiots that prevents him from being honored more among websites.

The major difference is undoubtedly the internet. Until the 70's, you barely saw a fighter unless he came to your home city. The only opinions you could read were from major newspapers. Now anyone can get on the internet, where there are almost no consequences for poor behavior, and say whatever they want. A journalist could not get away with that in the past. If you knew almost nothing about this past weekend's fight except that the champion was facing an undefeated challenger, and then watched the champion destroy him, you would undoubtedly proclaim the champion invincible. Hence, old-time fighters never had the magnifying glass placed onto all of their warts and flaws.

I disagree. The internet certainly allows every ******* an opinion, but there were literally thousands of newspapers as we as boxing magazines in the US alone. I'm not sure where you get the notion "you barely saw a fighter before the 70's unless he came to your hometown"? Even with the internet fighters are less popular than the 70's, and that not even going back to when fighters like Benny Leonard, Dempsey and Louis had there every move covered by the press.
