Isn't it funny how most UFC fans don't like boxing, yet want to see more stand up?

Give it a watch mate seriously, I've been diehard boxing fan my whole life and after getting into MMA it's on a par for me now.

If your a combat sports fan there is no way you could watch a guy like Anderson Silva and not enjoy it (in my opinion anyway)

There are some unbelievably skilled martial artists in the UFC.

The thing is, I used to love it. Back in the day when it was a tournie, Hoyce, Dan Severn (sp?) that kind of era, I was glued to it. I fell out with it a bit when they started breaking clinches though.

Anyway, I do see it plenty because i've got an obsessed mate who has good whisky, but I still just can't get into it.

    Oleg Taktarov for life.

I was the same McGrain, spending £20.00 on videos of Royce or watching shocking pirate videos and getting pissed off and falling out of it when weightclasses and rules started being implemented.

But now it's my 'modern sport'. Way more into it than boxing.

Obviously classic pugilism is in another bracket: obsession ;)

Boxers are specialists. They refine their skills within a very limited rule set, and therefore have fewer techniques they have to learn. All they have to worry about is how to land punches and avoid having punches landed on them. MMA fighters are generalists. They need to be good at a wide range of skills. Punching is only a small part of what they do. Since they have to learn so many techniques, they can't devote nearly as much time to developing their punching skills. They need to split up their time between punching, kicking, clinch work, takedowns, mat grappling, mat striking and transitions between all those various techniques.

In track and field terms, boxers are the guys who specialize and dominate in one event, while MMA fighters are the decathletes. Decathletes might not be the greatest in any one event, but they are good at all of the events. Contrast that with a champion shot putter trying to compete in the 110 meter hurdles or a champion at the 1500 meters trying to compete in the pole vault. They would fail .... much like most boxers would not succeed trying to wrestle, submission grapple, or event compete in striking under full Muay Thai rules. At the same time no decathlete ever usually wins an individual event, no MMA fighter is likely to ever be a champion in boxing as the skills needed are too specific.

I´ll say this.....In my lifetime as a fan of both I´ve seen more upsets in MMA than in Boxing BUT I think it is like that because the good fighters face each other more often in MMA than in modern Boxing.....

As an MMA fan when we are talking about standup I wanna see more MT not more boxing.

The Martinez/Chavez Jr fight put the final nail on the boxing coffin for me.

****in great fight, action packed and the ending was outstanding, but the thing made me rolled my eyes was when in the middle of the fight both guys were bended with there head glues to each other and they were still trying to body shot each other....the only thing I was able to think was just ****in knee him in the head FFS.

Boxing is a great sport, but like Borankk said several time on this forum I think, why limitit yourself using 2 weapon when you can use 8 ?

Overspecialisation is a ***** IMO, that's why I much much prefer MMA and if we are talking only stand up skills, MT is the way, not boxing !

To my mind if evenly matched MMA is way harder to predict, but its only logical. More weapons deployed, more variables to deal with, more chance of a TKO, so hence way more unpredictable.

  11. One criticism I see from mma fans watching boxing is the perceived lack of urgency and action. A laxk of interest in the chess thats boxing, they see boxing can go 6 rounds of jabs before a gameplan starts and the gameplan might be **** to look at from a spectator. There is a lot more pressure to finish in mma and violence is what looks good apparently

Also the fans are force fed a lot if promotion boxing needs to learn from that.

I'd also say ufc commentary on striking is fairly average to poor. Much more bjj/wrestling focused

MMA takes heart out of fighting, anybody can be MMA fighter.
Boxing you need real mental toughness, MMA not so much.
it bothers me most in MMA.

I think your generalising in terms of MMA fans, but in terms of the striking commentary I totally agree.

I saw Wlad fight, turned it off and went to the gym after the 8th round..... Here in 'Murica we won't get up for any Boxer besides Pacman or Mayweather. We have a lot of Hispanics, but The UFC is still favored.

As for OP, a few things.. Two men in full guard separates the casual cans from the core', and Striking is more appealing than Grappling.
