I agree, it should be a great prize, but the problem is that there's so many titles these days to allow promoters to keep people apart it just doesn't have the same value anymore unfortunately. The only lure if you like is that you can win your own version for keeps. There's the English title, Irish title if you're that way inclined, Commonwealth, interalphabetty.... etc. For me, if you want to be the British champion you can't have been Irish champion before that - and vice versa.
but is he trying to do it on the cheap? he wants to get it outright first fair enough, and id say hes fighting the highest ranked available challenger? it wnot be chisora, so who else can it be apart from skelton? if he wants to win it now, which he does he can only fight whats in front of him
I must admit, even as someone who likes to see Price do well, it does feel a bit shallow that it looks like he will end up winning the Lonsdale belt outright without having to fight any of the 3 stongest active British fighters of the time, in Haye, Fury and Chisora.
its a terrible fight, but who else can he face for the lonsdale belt people? lets take it as a given he wants to win this first before moving on, haye, chisora and fury wont want this fight now, so who else can he fight?
Sorry but the whole "Lonsdale outright" thing is merely an excuse to fight has been's and never were's. If he is going on to world level then keeping the British belt would not be top of the list of priorities, putting yourself about on the world stage however would be. He hasn't put himself in the frame for any Euro heavies like Helenius/ Chagaev or any of the Americans like Arreola, Adamek, Chambers, Wilder etc. Even if those fights would never have been made at least shout about them and look like you want them, don't peddle the garbage line of "I fight who is put in front of me" like that is going to wash with the fans who know that he is fighting stiffs. I think he may have a suspect chin, and that Maloney doesn't want to risk putting him in with a live opponent until it's big pay day time in case it gets tested. I maybe wrong but that's my inclination and until he fights a decent challenger capable of hitting back I will ignore all the hype about him. He could well turn out to be the heavyweight Bute when he steps up a level.
McDermott, Sexton, Harrison, Skelton, (Sprott, Rogan) Fury vacated and didn't want to fight Price so he's ruled out, Chisorsa is also ruled out. So in reality, who could Price fight rather than do it on the ''cheap'' if he wants to win the belt outright
Im complaining about the run of fights not the level of British opposition.....Instead of fighting one stiff after another just to win the Lonsdale, why doesn't he actually go a bit old school and slip in a few non-title fights in between. Some stiff Euro opposition just to raise his profile and ranking. This quest to win the belt outright fighting the level of opposition that he is is doing him no good at all.
Be difficult for him to have a fight in between the Harrison and Skelton fight, he isn't exactly going to fight every 2 weeks you know? He'll have won it outright by february anyway so just chill out, 9 months or so to win the British title outright isn't bad going.
The issue for me isn't so much the run of fights he's on currently, more so the fact it took him three years to get to that level. Theoretically, let's say he wins the British title outright in February. A run of McDermott, Sexton, Harrison, Skelton and 1 more is not bad at all in a 13 month period. But the fact he's proven to be way above this domestic level shows that he should have been testing himself a lot earlier. The issues after signing with Hayemaker were obviously out of his control but Maloney had him fighting no hopers for far too long when it wasn't necessary
Obviously if they can sell David Price versus Matt Skelton as a main event in Liverpool they will. It's easy money, no risk. People will pay to see this ****.
It's a ****ing joke and everyone who isn't elbow deep in Price's arse knows it. He could've fought Ustinov, Pulev.. Anyone, and this bull**** about "winning the British title outright" is an excuse to fight the **** domestic heavyweights we've got at the moment (past the big 3). Since Maloney loves to compared him to Lennox Lewis. Lewis's 15th pro fight was Gary Mason, Price's 15th (maybe 14th) pro fight is against Matt ****ing Skelton.. Who is 65 years old and was average at best in his prime.
