    Hi guys,

I'm in the process of setting up an amateur gym and I was wondering what your experiences have being with other gyms.

At the moment i'm thinking three one hour sessions- one for adults one for juniors three times a week, say monday wednesday and friday. Plus sparring on a tuesday and sunday.

    How does that sound?

That sounds good IMO, our gym used to try and run a kids session alongside the older lads and I just didn't work. Hour sessions when you account for warm ups and cool downs may be a bit short, but you've got it covered with extra sparring sessions I'd say. May notice that not many turn up on a Sunday mind :yep

I'm not sure.... Shadow boxing, skipping should all be part of your warm up. You can squeeze 14 rounds of work into an hour - with a minute rest.

Thanks though - appreciate the reply.

1 hour seems a bit too short imo
The extra sparring on tuesday and sunday is a good idea as is keeping juniors and seniors in different sessions.

well maybe the gym could be sort of an open gym rather than lessons.

One hour is fine for the juniors.

I think a one hour adult class might have the tendency to run over time though.
Really depends how you want to structure the classes and what you want your guys doing.

    Good luck with it mate.

I'm sure you already know but, what I would say, if you haven't got premises yet, is think long and hard about the area you set up in.

You need a large catchment area to ensure you have an endless supply of potential future champs able to get to the gym easily, on their own.

Which town / city are you setting up in?

    Rich.

really think long and hard about this before you commit to it.

what is your intention for this? have a profitable gym? turn out amateurs?

if it is to develop an amateur team I suggest you start looking at local rec centers in your neighborhood that might have the facilities but no coaches. start there and possibly get paid for it as an employee.

if it is for profit, are you presently making so much from your personal training that you may as well put money into your own place instead of "renting" space at another gym? most people i know with gyms have super big hearts that want to help people but don't make a lot of money at it.

if you're really thinking about this then here's my suggestion for a solid schedule:

    6am rec class
    7am rec class
    11am-1pm open gym
    2pm pros
    4pm boxing skills n drills
    5pm boxing conditioning
    6pm boxing skills n drills
    7pm boxing conditioning

the beauty of the 4-8pm alternating slots is that someone can come in at either 4, 5, or 6pm, stay for 2 hours and get both conditioning and skill development, or pick and choose which one hour class will be best for them on any given day. you could do the above schedule on mon, wed, fri and leave more available slots to train private clients on tues, thurs, sat, sun + after 8pm on all days.

this class system also gives you the opportunity to have a whole cycle of revenue tiers (ex. private=$100; unlimited classes=$125/mo; 1private + unlimited classes = $200 with a recurring contract/auto pay)

for sure get auto payments! most gyms make over 60% of their income from people who never show up. it's just part of the game. i was talking to an mma gym manager the other day that says only 6% of their clients use the gym. that means 94% are paying for the other 6% to have a facility to workout in. crazy!

there are a lot of good books out there about gym management (http://www.humankinetics.com/produc...Facilities-eBook---2nd-Edition?associate=6337) and search for everything you can about running a martial arts gym for profit. they know how to make money way better than most boxing gyms do.

    good luck!

Sounds good, and like the split out sparring. I've been to gyms where I always get put in to spar (sessions are on the same days as normal trainings), and don't do many drills. This is fun, but stagnates your technical development.

I think senior session should be an hour and a half though. You'll always overrrun an hour. Warm-up, technical stuff, pads, groundwork? Will be tough to fit in if anything delays and you want to be able to take time with your boxers to work on mistakes rather than just rushing through the rounds.

I've trained in 4 different gyms over a prolonged period of time.
One was Mon, wed and fri 6.30pm-8pm, adults and kids trained together at same time. I didnt mind this when I was a kid but as an adult it annoted me having kids carrying on etc whilst I wanted to train.

Another was open every weekday 2pm-9-10pm and you dropped in and trained how you wished. The coah was always there to offer help and to run sparring sessions which were typically 6-8pm. The gym was closed to adults between 4-530pm every weekday for kids to train. This is the gym where Ricky Burns spent all his time as an amateur and right up until about 10 fights ago when he left to train with Billy Nelson.

Another I trained in was Mon, Wed, Fri 7-9pm for adults and kids at the same time again. It wasnt over ran with kids and different coaches concentrated on the kids, one on adults- worked ok and had British amatuer champions. Every aspet of our training was dictated by the coach

The gym I train in now is Mon, Wed, Fri 430-530pm kids, adults free to come in 530-8. Come in and do your own thing on bags etc, then coah takes sparring/pads then circuts afterwards. Open on Tue and Thu nights for fighters.
