I am in decent shape, but I have just started trying to practice pull ups. I cannot even do one. What muscles should I train to improve this?
I see guys twice my size that are able to do 5-6 wide pull ups and it's embarrassing. I always shied away from bodyweight exercises, apart from press ups and sit ups.

    advice, anyone?

train your upper back. do machine pull downs. same conecpt but using lower weight... build up your muscle a bit and lose a little bit of weight (if you have any to lose) and you'll be doing a pull up in no time.

It is a compound exercise involving the biceps, forearms and several upper back muscles as the primary movers. pull-ups with the palms facing away and usually a wider than shoulder width grip really hit the lats.

I have a question. How much do you weigh compared to many years ago and what body type do you have. I used to be thin,, and I could do pull ups.. Then I gained weight and tried it and it was very difficult since I never had to lift the body weight I have now, which was totally different. I can do push ups, but pull ups are hard. It could have to do you gaining more weight since when you were young and just building up slowly. Maybe instead of pull ups you do that where you hang there for awhile and then that will build it up. I think my comment might be sort of idiotic. Thought I would type it anyway.

okay, I will try. I know that pull downs are good, but I'm weak as **** on them as well. I can only pull about 50kg for 6 reps. I lost a lot of weight few months ago and I no doubt lost quite a bit of muscle too, so I need to build the muscle and strength back up. But I've never ever done pull ups, so I would like to at least accomplish 1!

Nothing in particular. I lost a lot of weight and have some loose skin, mainly around the belly, but want to lose it and am just trying to do a lot of compound exercises. I heard that pull ups were one of the best back exercise for building muscle and burning fat because they're a big muscle.
