Cesaer's Palace outdoor parking lot. 15 rounds at 175 (not 168) in early NOVEMBER. No heat wave here...Could Ray win a ligh heavy title legit?

Ray's speed, killer intstinct, and underrate power would be too much for Joey, and after five rounds, Ray would step up the pace, hurting Joey around the eleventh round, and stopping him in the thirteenth.

joey would jab the **** out of ray. ray's speed would be telling and his footwork would be an asset but maxim would keep him at a safe enough distance that ray's combinations would be significantly limited. the size difference is massive and in close, maxim could exert his physicality on the inside. he proved against patterson that he could, to some degree, limit a man with faster hands and faster feet through holding, spoiling and decent body work. patterson had handspeed comparable to leonard and better footwork.

    Maxim UD

I'm reposting something I wrote for the Maxim vs. Qawi thread, but substituting Leonard for Qawi:

Bob Satterfield couldn't knock out Maxim.

Lloyd Marshall couldn't knock out Maxim

Jimmy Bivins couldn't KO Maxim in 20 rounds

Jersey Joe Walcott couldn't KO Maxim in 30 rounds

Archie Moore couldn't KO Maxim in 45 rounds

Ezzard Charles couldn't KO Maxim in 62 rounds

Conclusion: Sugar Ray Leonard is not knocking out Joey Maxim

Maxim would be too negatively clever (think Jimmy Young) and big for Leonard. Part of his success with negative clev erness would be utiliing his superior strength over Ray in clinches, leaning on him, and other static defensive tactics. In a long, tedious and defensive bout, Maxim would win a comfortable 15 round decision over a frustrated SRL.

This too. Maxim had an excellent chin and would never even come close to being decked, nevermind stopped by Leonard.

yes, i agree with this. Calzaghe didn't have quite a size deficit as did Leonard, and his high punch volume would be too much for the ultradefensive maxim to ward off successfully over the course of a 15 round bout. I say this with some confiidence in reckoning that calzaghe would have been an excellent 15 round fighter.

    Yes Sir :good

One thing that's always intreuged me about that. We have all these fighters now using scientific techniques to try to ensure that their in the best shape possible. Oxygen chambers, suppliments, etc etc. Many of them struggle with twelve rounds.

Calzaghe was whipped into shape by his father, using hills, a medicine ball and grit. Calzaghe may be the fittest fighter we've had in decades.

I think that tells us something.

I've become more and more a fan of JC. He's dumped on quite a bit for slapping and other such ****, but he was a pretty amazing fighter truthfully.

Calzaghe would have ball in feasting on guys like Froch (especially Froch), Ward, Dawson, Tarver, Johnson, and that clown who "beat" Dawson who fought Hopkins twice.

And the manner of victory leads fans to dismiss the fighters beaten to the point where they 'add nothing' to JC's resume.

He, Hopkins and Jones all suffered from the same curse.
