Honestly Frank it was an off tee cuff remark. My assumption had always been that moving up gave Pedroza much needed strength and punch resistance. But its possible he changed stylistically to a dirtier rougher fighter.
He was just oh so determined to keep that title of his. Remember, he flopped vs Zamora, and after beating Cecilio Lastra, he probably had that mush more steely determination to compensate and keep the title, defense after defense after defense, using whatever means he had available, dirty or no. If I may attempt to read into Pedroza's psyche that is.
Ali was the personification of what ring generalship really is. He did his own thinking and didn't need anyone to tell him what to do. He was resourceful and would adapt to any situation.
