When you train to box and your opponent trains to grapple it's the wrong sport. The sweet science is turning into a crude science exemplified by Mares, Guerrero, Hopkins and to some extent Ward. I much prefer to watch the science as applied by Martinez, Mayweather, Pacquiao, Canelo, Broner, Froch, Donaire ...

You're right, it was'nt even a great inside war and the fight was fought in close quarters.
Berto tried using the shoulder defense, but he was'nt rolling neighter his shoulder or head as Mayweather employs that defense.
For that defense to work, you have to have boxing instinct and awareness as to see and anticipate where the shots are coming from. Berto does'nt have that talent.
Berto was'nt swiveling either the shoulder, head, or waist. He was for the most part stationary in the shoulder pose defense which is'nt much of a defense if you dont roll, swivel, and move.

When Guerrero had his head buried to Berto's shoulder, all that needed to be done was to sidestep Guerrero and fire shots. Berto's uppercut which was effective would have been even more so had he turned Guerrero when he Berto had his back to the ropes. But instead all Berto did was lean on the ropes.

Imo both Guerrero and Berto are 2nd tier at Welter, neither beats the top 3 there Mayweather, Marquez, Pacquiao!

Check that, make it top 4, I'll even include Bradley on that list.

did people hoestly not enjoy that fight.

I thought it was a great fight. I agree i'd prefer it at a distance, but they were constantly throwing on the inside, so that part wasnt boring

It was a good enough fight that could have been much better if so much of the fight had'nt been fought when one or both fighters had only one hand free.
The fight was fought very sloppy!

I looked for the result on sunday morning. Bad lefthook said it was FOTY contender and a thriller. With a rematch in order
Iwatched it on Skyplus sunday afternoon looking forward to a great fight. Instead it was mauling, clinching foul filled, dirty, roughhouse type of fight.
How badlefthook were thrilled by that ill never know

i agree it was sloppy. but the passion and will to win in there, and the amount of hard shots landed. I thought it was exciting personally.

Bero and gurrero both went up in my books and i'm looking forward to both there next fights

You think their stock went up?

From a boxing fans perspective and looking at it from the x's and o's side of it, I think why did Guerrero need and have to constantly hold Berto's left hand and keep it wrapped up?

Looking at Berto I think, why did'nt he try to avoid Guerrero's grasps by lateraling and turning Guerrero? Zero footwork by either fighter.
I saw alot of deficiencies in both.
I dont see it as their stock going up based on that showing.

Deficiencies yes. I never knew either them were as tough as they were. Neither stopped throwing, I never new gurrero could mix with top welters or could take a top welter punch.

befoe the fight neither were on my radar. Berto was out for drugs, and gurrero i thought of as a blown up lightweight.

Now i feel like i have 2 welters that i look forward to seeing who they fight next, and think would make great fights with the other welters in the end.

But i agree with your point that nether boxer are perfect. But i like my boxers flawed, i think it makes for more appealing fights.

Ahh, I see. You were expecting less of them. You did'nt think much of them to begin with.

I actually thought both were talented and expected a better skill level and a cleaner less sloppy fight.

I have'nt seen a whole lot of Guerrero, but I'd never seen him hold like he did Berto. I'm thinking this is how Guerrero handles speed, which in turn tells me he could'nt possibly have much success against either Mayweather or Pacquiao who offer alot of both hand and footspeed and have more dimensions than what Berto has shown his last several fights.

One thing i like about guerrero is he can box from the outside against good inside fighters, See Katsidis. But then is he is fighting someone who he thinks has better hand speed, he can also turn it into a dog fight.
That with a determination to win and a good chin. I think he is a good fighter.
    I was impressed.

With Berto, i see him more one dimension. You get him on the back foot and press the action, and he looks nowhere near as good as when he is bullying someone.
