I could understand if he was actually a big draw. But in his last fight in Oakland, a supposed mega fight with china Chad, he drew just 8500 spectators. That's even with ticket prices starting at a pathetic $25!!!

The only reason he insists on fighting there is he likes the protection that fighting in his backyard gives him. He can fight the fight he wants - holding and headbutting - and no one's going to stop him. Plus any close rounds are going his way.

Out of Kesslers first 34 fights, 33 were in Denmark.

Out of Frochs first 27 fights 24 were held in England.

Out of Abrahams first 27 fights 25 were in Germany.

Do you think California is a country or something?

    Does it matter?

Its bigger than Germany and the UK.

Its literally 10 times the size of Denmark. LA where Ward is fighting Pavlik is 400 miles from Oakland.

ANd besides England isnt really a country, its a part of the UK

Has he had any tough close fights where being in the opponents territory or not @ home would have made a significant difference in the fight?

    NO.

I am from the bay and Ward is not that popular out here. I honestly believe he is not an elite fighter and is very protected by his management team.

    1. California is larger and more populated than most countries. We are talking jet plane commutes, not hopping in the car.

    2. He's not getting gift decisions or crap stoppages. I can safely say the Andre wins his fights in any venue. Can you really say Joe Cal gets his stoppages anywhere but home?

    3. This is the only knock Andre's haters can come up with, and it is weak. His boxing skills don't come from his location. As the fight with Froch and his Olympic gold medal from Athens can attest, he has skills regardless of location.

The problem is that Ward has never been tested away in a big genuine fight or world title fight.
Many fighters early in their careers fight in foreign countries, like Hatton had his second fight in America, but it wasnt a big fight where he had something to lose.

Point is Ward hasnt proven himself away in world title fights

He is not in controversial fights and hes not ducking any of the contenders in his weight so dont really see a problem with it

When Calzaghe was at Wards stage in his career, how many times had he been tested away from home?

Its terrible that fighters get to hide in their own back yard like this. Theres no way Ward would have won either the Boone fight or the Bika fight else where.

    The difference:

Joe Cal got boatloads of gift stoppages at home. Andre doesn't.

He had one ugly fight against Kessler, but there are three lowlight videos of Joe Cal crap stoppages.

Never has Andre received a gift anywhere close to Joe Cal's "KO" of Manfredo.
