Sibbo for me, just a better all round boxer, great jab, workrate, power, & chin. It would need a counter punching techician only of the level of the great Marvin Hagler to prevail & that ai'nt gonna be Nigel.
The more well rounded version of Nigel Benn, circa 1991-95 would have stopped 'Sibbo' on a late round tko. The gung ho Benn of 1989-90 would have gassed out against Tony, and would have been stopped, himself. Good fight !
Benn wins via a couple of savage left hooks in round 4. Sibson would have been in the fight for the first couple of rounds and would have rocked Benn, but would have been badly hurt in the 3rd and maybe even down in that round. In the 4th, he would still be on shaky legs and Benn would step up the pace to a crescendo and finish Tony off in that round.
the middleweight version of benn could get beat here but that version could also win . i will go for benn as he get the big shot in first but it well go either way
Sibbo was a world class operator, demolished Alan Minter & anyone remember when he annialated the new great middlewight hope in Bostons' Irish John Collins. Nigel got taken out by Michael Watson & that was just for the Commonwealth Belt. Sure Nigels got a shot of landing a bomb but Sibbo had a granite chin & really is a level above Nigel.
Yeh the shock on the yanks/Collins crew faces was a picture He absoluted smashed the **** out of him:yep I think that Hagler defeat took something out of Sibbo mentally, he blew hot & cold did'nt he, back then you went back to the bottom of the top 10 & had to work yer way back up. You only ever got one shot at the "MAN" & the rest is all about earning yer corn local or Europe. I remember that week when he fought that frog in Paris, that was the week i think England were playing the frogs on 3 fronts, footie/rugby & Sibbo fighting in Paris on the Saturday night. Do you remember it all kicking off Usual 80's mayhem, I'll never forget that skinhead jumping into the ring before the fight screaming abuse at all the frenchies:rofl come on you ****s! Lets be avin yeh:yep
I liked Sibson, but slightly favour Benn in this one.Dont want to detract, but did Tony not catch Minter at the right time?
Sibson was strong and a good fighter, but Nigel had some of the quickest hands I ever saw. That win over Barkley was not a fluke. He was cranking up punches on Barkley which made Barkley's counters look slow. I think Nigel wins this on TKO in 10
Sibbo would rip Nigel up, he's just a better all round boxer, Sibbo loved to go to war, don't get me wrong, i'm a massive fan of Nigel but he just has'nt the required tools to overcome Sibbo. Look at this fight aginst Collins, Sibbo's still only 25 & plenty of speed, great jab + great footwork & power, he had a left hook from hell, matches & surpasses Nigel in all departments:smoke Nigels an all out warrior as we know but it's more than evident that not many on here know to much about Sibbo. Here's Sibbo slipping on the perennial banana skin in Dangerous Don Leeatsch Listin to the commentary of this bye gone times, Sibbo is getting £50K Good bread! This was how they earned their corn, no big juicy mayweather HBO contracts for these fellers. They put it all on the line, yer did'nt fight then you did'nt eat, Sibbo was fighting the frog for the euro title a month before this bout & thats when the euro title meant something. But this was a serious **** up on the part of Mickey duff & co. The ****in size of this Don Lee & a southpaw, Sibbo was meant to get him out of they easy & collect the $$$$$, just goes to show, that the best laid plans ect, Sibbo was always a tad lax in his preperation & how many times have we seen this sort of upset/plan wrecker happen. But this bout had some superb boxing from both protagonists, such a higher standard back then, common place 10 rounder. All we have today is hand picked miss matches & record padding:-( [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QR820bSBEYo[/ame] [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GnuyPGepMqc[/ame] [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zJXfjcmXxkg[/ame]
If we are talking Middleweight Benn, I think Sibson wins 3 out of 4 times. It would be an initial torrid war for three rounds, but then providing he is still with it, Sibson should gain control slowly and stop Benn in the later rounds. As already mentioned the smarter 168lbs version of Benn would be a warm favourite over Tony.
The best Sibson, pre-Hagler, would be too much for the MW Benn, imo. Sibbo had a great jab, could do the 15 and was a bull of a MW with a great hook to body and head, however, as Benn displayed against Logan - YOU NEVER KNOW! I would have a small wager on Tony though. Duranaanimal - thanks for that clip, that brings back memories - I have that figth on VHS somewhere, haven't seen it for years. Enjoyed the post-fight interview, what a lovely fellah Sibbo was, humble, un-assuming; never gave it large. One of those blokes who would stand quietly in the pub not looking for trouble but would definitely put it on any bully that tried it on!!! A proper man's man, an old school bloke.
