He certainly looks it from the outside. I think his fighters have made him appear to be a better coach than he actually is, I think they realise that after a period of time.

Not fair to say. His record has to be taken at face value. The only way to gauge a trainer's abilities are based on what his resume says.....and Roach has quite the resume. Not to mention his mentor was the late great Eddie Futch....you can't have a better teacher in the sweet science than that. You drive a hard bargain.

What fighters has he built from the ground up or dramatically improved? Maybe Pac, but I think you can make a good case for Ariza's conditioning being the difference there. He's had a lot of big names for a fight or two and they move on. I like his calmness in the corner during fights but he doesn't seem to give good advice. And during interviews he appears to be an egotistical trash talker.

He dramatically improved Pacquaio, Khan and Chavez Jr.

I'm not his biggest fan either, but credit where credit is due.

I haven't seen those guys improve their boxing skills under Roach. I've seen them able to fight at a higher intensity for longer. So I give more credit to their S+C team than Roach there.

****....ALL trainers have fighters that "move on". Look at Floyd Sr....look at Goosen, Brooks and a Steward. Look at how many Coaches have actually produced fighters from "the ground up"? Not many. Usually they already had formal training before linking up to "the next level". Most fighters have some cockiness to them....trainers are no different...especially when they use to be fighters.

Maybe he's improved Chavez Jr. some, but dramatically?

Chavez is still not using his height and reach which Roach should have been working with him on doing so.

The improvements I've seen of Chavez Jr. have been physically, not so much boxistically.
Now, is the physical improvement credit given to Roach or Ariza in this case?

Improvements yes, dramatic no! The same is probably true of Amir Khan, defensively I dont think Roach has done enough to improve that side of the game for any of his fighters.

    1. He blamed Billy Graham for the Mayweather loss.

    2. And Floyd senior for the Pacquiao loss.

    3. Bob Shannon has already publicly said the Senchenko loss was Ricky's fault, not his. Who knows what Ricky's saying about Shannon right now?
