Louis would ruin Burley and most other fighters that have come and would become...John Henry Lewis KO in 1.....Louis would also roll through Bowe,Lewis and the Klitschko's and be better equipped than Frazier in the FOTC IMO...Brown Bomber had all the tools, he was near perfection...Burley should stay south of 200lbs, especially in Joe's league

His style would be terrible for Joe Louis a boxer that could out maneuver him at every turn, better than Walcott with far far far superior boxing skills, and the reason i made this thread is because he fought alot of heavyweights and i believe he could beat Louis, When your ducked by Sugar Ray Robinson you know you must be something great, and Burley proved he could stay in with heavyweights easily, i think you think im stupid for this but if you knew enough about Burley you would not be saying this is a waste of space, Burley is perhaps the greatest ever, too good for a title shot too good to face decent opponents even, learn enough about Burley to call this thread stupid and then i might listen until then your boxrec opinions of him are not wanted here

Well I sort of agree and disagree

Burley faced Charles and Bivins who imposed their size on him and he's only what 5'8 and 155? As opposed to even a 167lb Conn (if that weight's right?)

On the otherhand Louis had more problem with mobile, defensive counter punchers

I can't see Burley winning, I can see him winning a few rounds before the inevitable, but that isn't a given either it could be a blow out

Louis would do the same to Burley that he would do to LaMotta, Harry Greb, Roy Jones, James Toney, Mickey Walker, Bob Fitzsimmons, etc., basically every other overachieving middleweight/lightheavy that you can mention, ala Billy Conn.

The Louis of the 1st Conn fight was not the best version of himself. For the best version, you'll have to refer to the Louis of the Baer fight. That frighteningly good, almost perfect, pre-Schmeling version of Joe Louis. That version wasn't the one of the 1st Schmeling fight, either. As great as Louis was, that version of him from the Baer fight was never seen again.

But I'm not sure why there's so many 'hysterically laughing' smiley's. Burley was possibly the best fighter ever to put on a pair of gloves, with a skill set and natural abilities that seemed inhuman even to his champion and ATG contemporaries. When footage of this fighter was found, we learnt that his contemporaries weren't exaggarating, so I think some respect for Burley in what would have been the only title fight- and so the biggest fight in his career, is required.

Burley would have come in absolutely his best of best shape, and I can easily see him doing what Conn did but better. But of course, the Louis that Conn fought wouldn't be the Louis of this matchup, we're talking the switched-on Louis of the Schmelling rematch. Pressure, trap and destroy would be Louis' game-plan, and being a peak Louis it would take a remarkable opponent to avoid that. Burley would really have to get on his wheels to stop from being caught and hurt, and despite his phenomanal elusiveness and ability to control and bout; I think he is just not sturdy enough to absorb the damage fighting Louis would incur (be it by attrition throughout or a Louis onslaught).

Burley's own opinion of Louis was high, but he still beleived he could beat him, or so I have read in either the ********* or Otty book. But then, many lighter fighters look at the Hvy boys and see only the slowness of hand and foot, and forget about the pressure they exert and the relative power that Hvy's have. Burley's chin isn't going to absorb much of Louis' punches, he was a welter-middleweight after all. Louis for his part believed Burley was the best fighter out there, and he and Blackburn had immense respect for him. Had Burley ever won a 175lb title it's concievable that Louis could even have gifted Burley a shot ala the John Henry Louis title shot.

Speaking of John Henry Lewis, that bout with Louis is no analogy for my mine. Lewis was blind, shot and the bout was gifted payday from Louis as far as I understand. Lewis would have done a lot better without being in the diminished physical condition he was in, and also I doubt Louis would try and starch Burley out in one round and risk running in to something himself cold as he did with the shot Lewis. Louis wouldn't have feared Burley's power, but he would have acknowledged it, especially early given Burley's immense guile.

Louis by late kayo or points over 15 if Burley 'boxes'/continually disengages.

Hate to disagree with you ecto about John Henry Lewis being a "shot" fighter when JH was flattened by Joe Louis in the very first round in 1939.
Yes JH Lewis was losing sight of one eye before the fight, but at only 25 years of age Lewis won 6 fights in a row beating the likes of Jock McAvoy,
Emilio Martinez,Bob Olin, Martinez again and the tough Al Gainer...This edition of JH lewis would have given any LH in history a hell of a night,but
against the still prime most devastating hitter in history Brown Bomber,
Lewis was overwhelmed as would the 155 pound Charley Burley would also be....

But Burley would never risk going for a knockout.... He was very very cautious didn't matter if he was fighting Joe Louis or Jimmy Ellis he wouldn't have risked it with either of them if he thought he could of won without a knockout he wouldn't of tried, it often made his fights boring apparently but he won them
