Cotto is severely underrated in fight commentary

Trout-Cotto could've gone either way and it should be a draw. However, this is now the second time that I've seen Cotto fight where the commentary has been atrocious. That 11 rd was supposedly Trout's round according to the high pitched, unusually boring and biased commentary from Showtime. This round saw a much larger man get hit cleanly with powerful and accurate jabs preventing him from being able to press action. During these moments we heard some stupid analysis or commentary praising Trout. My guess is that Bernstein caught a glimpse of that near shutout card and decided to put on the kneepads before the end of the fight.

Trout proved he is a smart, fast boxer. However, he didn't show me that he was able to cleanly beat a champion. The 11 rd in particular saw him land some good stuff but he couldn't put together any sort of offensive cadence that A. won him the round clearly or B. proved that he had the same ability as Pacquiao and Mayweather.

I gave Cotto 3-4 rounds for Mayweather and at least a couple more points against Pacquiao before the TKO. Boxing commentary praises partial hits to his face from straights and ignores his more accurate, disruptive, and more hurtful jabs.

Keep in mind that Trout was the bigger man and couldn't figure out how to beat this disruptive fighter by a sustained offensive volley like Mayweather was able to produce. I don't care if he can't do it by volume like Pacquiao, but he missed his opportunity to clearly get a true victory against Cotto.

This doesn't mean that I hate the man personally or that I don't think he is a good fighter or even that he can't get to an elite level. i'm just calling it like I see it, boxing judges rewarded style over punishment, numbers over effectiveness, and technique over creativity.

I see Trout unable to beat Mayweather or Alvarez. He and Pacquiao would never fight but even at 154 current Pacquiao would still probably beat him.

I'm no butthurt fan of Cotto, either. I have several problems with him. I just didn't see him lose this fight, even if he didn't win.

Your nuts. If anything Paulie and Bernstein were making every excuse for him and giving him every benefit of the doubt. Watch it again with the sound off and it will look like Cotto losing round after round.

Cotto looks bad when he starts to move around as the fight goes on. But honestly, Trout wasn't landing much of anything. They tried to show Trout's best shots sometimes in the replay, almost nothing of note, nothing landed except for a few decent uppercuts, about 3-4. I do think Cotto lost. He lost because he faded, seemed tired and the size was a factor.

I'll rewatch it again. I thought Trout had maybe 1 more round than what they were giving him early on.

    Before round 9:
    5 Rds for Trout
    3 Rds for Cotto

That's what I was feeling although it could've been even.

Rd 9 I thought was Trout, maybe Cotto.
    Rd 10 was Trout.
    Rd 11/12 were Cotto.

    My scorecard would be 7-5, 6-6, and I wouldn't mind a 7-5 Cotto decision.

Cotto faded against Mayweather and really ****ing bad against Pacquiao. Trout faded despite being far bigger and fresher.

I'm not lumping on hate to Trout, he's a young champion, could get better. But his ass shouldn't be crowned.

It was a close fight. Byrd should never be allowed to judge a fight again. I agree with Paulie...........

Who beat Cotto's ass? It certainly wasn't Trout. Every time he got close to doing something similar to what you described he got caught and regretted it instantly.

I don't have a lot of problems with the outcome...scores were too wide though. I'm happy Trout got what he's worked for. But all that aside, I have to agree, the commentators seem to ignore half of his body work.

Trout swept the 2nd half of the fight. His work was more numerous and consistent. Tremendous performance and he deserves the big payday that comes next.

Ridiculous. The fight commentary gave every close round to Cotto and made it seem like Trout won by a razor thin margin.

    Trout definitely won the fight.

Cotto was good in the earlier rounds then right on cue he started to fade mid rounds and that's when trout picked him apart

    with lovely shots.

  15. I was at the fight tonight and believe me it was no where near a draw....It was a boxing class by Trout.

I really don't know what Cotto's gameplan was (if he had one) he seemed to just swallow jabs for 2.30 minutes then just charge at Trout for a while throwing wild hooks
