....uses his name to entice beatable welterweights -- Ortiz, Alexander, Maidana, etc, -- to make one-off jumps up to 154 to enjoy a healthy payday.

The man clearly can't be bothered making the effort to come down to the weight his size is suited to, but neither is he built to compete with the best junior middleweights. But what he does have in his favour, is his negotiating power to bring guys that are equal to him in size (welterweights) up to the weight he can't be bothered going below.

That's what I expect him to do.

I accept him bringing guys up to 154. Never understood his insanely high ranking on ring classification tho. If you want to be rated at 154 you should beat rated fighters at the weight.

Exactly. I scoffed at those claiming him to be the number one 154 pounder, when he hadn't even beaten a decent fighter at that weight. Trout was the first legit junior middleweight he fought. Got mad respect for Cotto, but he was never the number on guy at the weight at any point.

 

I actually think Cotto beats them all quite comfortably. Don't be mistaken by Cotto being defeated last night, he actually performed pretty good, it's just Trout performed very good, this combined with the physical advantages was what caused the result. Not to be implied to be taking away from Trouts victory, but that's what happens when moving up in weight/facing bigger opposition...your skill set only takes you so far.

Cotto v Alexander - Alexander has a very healthy speed advantage, but doesn't really have the power to trouble Cotto. I could actually see Cotto breaking Alexander down, especially at the higher weight.

Cotto v Ortiz - Cotto makes him walk on to heavy shots continually (Ortiz can't box going backwards). Ortiz's best punch is his right, which Cotto can be caught with, but Cotto's jab and left hook will find a home consistently as Ortiz doesn't take advantage of the southpaw stance.

Cotto v Maidana - Not much analysis is needed, really (no disrespect to Maidana).
