Cotto is done. Now he can be with his family. Whoever he fights next,(if he decides to continue) will beat him also.

 

I would very rarely go and make comments like that but Foreman was the definition of a paper champ. His best win was probably against Soto Caras. Moreover he was hampered by an injury during the fight. Cotto is a great fighter but he never fought the top togs at 154 and he is not suited for that division. His short reach was a problem even at 147. Fighting a tall rangy southpaw with skills was too much for him at 154. But other fighters at the weight like Lara, Vanes, Angulo, Canelo, Molina and Kirkland were going to trouble him as well and I would favor a lot of them to beat him.

 

I wouldn't mind seeing Cotto retire now, dont want him taking anymore beatings.

Trout was a terrible matchup too. His length and speed gave Cotto fits on top of the fact that he did a great job of either being all the way inside to smother Cotto's work or to be at range where he was most effective.

Cotto tired down the stretch which is the most concerning thing from my perspective as far as Cotto's carer moving forward is concerned. Beyond that though, Cotto is still a good fighter that got beat by the better man.

The reality of the situation is that Cotto has nothing more to prove really. That loss, and how convincing it was will take time to bounce back from. Does he want it? Does he need it? **** man, if I were him I'd take my millions and live nicely in Puerto Rico for the rest of my life instead of working that damn hard chasing something that is past prime.

 

Cotto could go that route, and it's ultimately what I expect him to do for a couple fights until he loses again, but I'm wondering if it is really worth it? He looks like a fraction of the hungry fighter he was at his peak and every single fight against world-class opposition is going to hurt him long-term. He doesn't have the reflexes, defense, durability, stamina, or offensive sharpness and timing to have easy/punishment-free nights against any top guys at 147 or 154 pounds anymore. He used to be more or less decent to very good at everything (never great in one area which is what held him back from being a true great in my opinion), but now he looks downright shitty in a number of areas.

At this point, Cotto's relevancy is very limited. He used to fight with the goal of establishing himself as the best fighter in the sport, to amass great victories over the best fighters in the world, and he's fallen short not only against the two greatest of his generation, but an young unknown guy who wanted to make a name for himself. Cotto would just kind of be "hanging around" now - for paydays and fights on the second tier.

I'd like to see him retire.

 

Yeh, relative to the top levels Foreman wasn't very good. His best win by name was Daniel Santos who he won the title off of...problem is Santos hadn't fought in a year and was totally out of shape for the fight (not surprisingly Santos hasn't fought since). However, Foreman was dominated over 6 rounds by Pawel Wolak who was an entertaining fighter but not anywhere near a top fighter.

 

Funny thing is Mayweather, Cotto and Canelo are the top 3 at 154 when neither has fought a ranked LMW. Now that Cotto did we saw where he really stands Canelo and Mayweather (if he is to stay at 154) should follow.

He looked like he has always looked. He was just beaten by a better 154 pounder. There are a few others that will do the same.

 

Cotto can't make 154 without draining himself down. He just doesn't have the skill to compete with guys his size that are more talented. I bet he could beat a guy like K9 because K9 isn't a boxer.

 

I thought he looked much better in his younger days. More fluid and compact with his combinations, committed more to his shots, faster and snappier punches, and seemed more coordinated and purposeful overall. I give Trout full credit, think he's a really good fighter, and definitely consider him superior to Cotto now, but Cotto has looked like a diminished fighter recently. He really got up for the Mayweather fight, but against in two of his last three outings (Mayorga included), he looked faded. It's to be expected with the amount of difficult fights he's been in.

cotto is a small 154.

his wins are only over the 50yr old mayorga, one legged foreman and margo where he was also badly fading in the end. he should go back down to 147.

 

Im not even sure he'd beat Maidana. Any of these guys would be Cottos best win in years

 

He looked great at 140 when Arum was protecting him like a virgin's hymen. If he would have fought the legit champion or even just more dangerous 140 pounders I suspect he wouldn't have looked so dominate.
