Wow! I figured the U.S had the highest prices for PPV's. That sucks that you had to pay that much to watch a fighter from your own country fight.
Groups of friends in that number who are all boxing fans are very, very scarce now.....unfortunately.
At least u can watch the fight. Here in Germany we dont even have the fight on TV. I gotta stay awake till 7 in the morning with the hope that i will find a decent stream. Last time i had to watch Mayweather/Cotto on a russian stream.....That mother****er didnt shut the **** up for one second.
Damn......you really get the **** end of the deal in Germany. That would totally suck to have to resort to watching a stream with the commentators speaking a language you don't even understand.
regardless of how big of a boxing fan you are....there is no way you can tell me you have no problem paying the large amount of $70 for a fight....unless you are rich of course
i have my friends over here but dont charge. its not a big deal to me. it is a ***** but its rare that we see fights on this level as it is anymore. not many big events in boxing these days
Imagine how Puerto Ricans felt for the Cotto/Trout fight All joking aside though... I haven't paid full price for a PPV fight for as long as I can remember. I have like 2 friend's that are into boxing as much as I am and that right there splits the bill 3 ways. And if they are doing something that night then there's always a bar (If it's a big enough fight, which I know Marquez/Pac will be, considering iv'e even seen it advertised at bars... which is rare for boxing.). If it's a less popular fight, id recommend calling up different bars and asking if they are showing it, so you don't waste you time driving around. Also try casinos if you have any nearby. Unfortunately, the PPV price keeps going up because people are paying it. It's a win/lose for us. It means more people are getting into it, bringing boxing's popularity up, but then again, I kinda like boxing as a niche sport without the bull**** mainstream coverage. If you think the whole Pac/Mayweather fiasco is a soap opera now, imagine what the sports media would do if boxing became mainstream.
That is very nice of you. Another one of my complaints is that fights that should be on regular HBO or Showtime are on PPV, and that also bugs me. Why should we have to pay to see fights(which some are not worthy of paying for) when all other sports you can watch for free. I have been buying PPV's for years....but with the whole Mayweather-Pacquiao still not fighting each other and other divisions of the best not fighting the best, but still there is a yearly increase to purchase PPV.....that really pisses me off
Lots of great points you made there. That is nice that you have friends that will split the PPV with you, but even in that case it is still way overpriced. You are definitely right about them raises the cost because people keep paying it, which I am one of them, but I have grown tired of the constantly increasing cost of watching fights and I am done with it. Like you, I also do like the aspect that boxing is not so mainstream, but then again I feel like if it was mainstream like other sports, we wouldn't have to keep paying such high amounts to watch fights.
I think it's the opposite. People don't get into boxing because you have to pay a big fee up front to even find out if you like the product at its best. They generate fewer new fans, but the old fans are die hard so they bleed them for every cent they can get. As a result, the most popular boxers become ultra-rich, but excellent boxers are lucky to make a middle class income. And people who are as good at boxing as a solid MLB starter is at baseball won't even make enough to support themselves. And as a result of that, there's no incentive for kids, at least in America, to get into the sport as athletes. "Get your brains bashed in, eat like a model and work like a slave and, provided you are enormously talented, there is a 1% chance you will one day make what a postal worker does and a .01% chance you'll become very rich." I'm sure they would disagree, but I think one reason the UFC grows so fast is that it has younger fans who know how to watch the matches without paying for them and are very comfortable watching stuff on a computer. I know a lot of guys who watch all the big UFC cards and I'd guess that they pay for it 10% of the time at most. More generally, there's no way the average UFC fan is spending $700 a year on PPVs. But, of course, the UFC does a great job marketing itself and offers great cards on a regular basis, so it is worth the trouble to get into it and follow it that way. Even though most of the fans are leaching, the sport grows, people know the stars, it becomes part of the culture and it makes more money down the line. You can watch boxing online too, but it's still up to you do find out who the hell this Gamboa guy is, who hasn't fought in a year, and why you should want to watch him fight in the first place. Never mind his opponent. So guys like I described will probably stream the biggest main events like this one and just not bother with boxing otherwise. As for me, boxing is easily my favorite sport, but I gave it up when it became too expensive and only came back when I figured out how to watch for free. As a result, they get some money from me at smaller live shows now instead of none at all. I'm just never paying $70 to watch anything on TV ever. Well, maybe the execution of Pat Robertson, but that's about it.
