Larry Merchant set to leave HBO after 35 years?

I'm thinking Floyd Senior would be an ideal replacement with Teddy Atlas filling in on Floyd's "Old School" weekends.

 

I liked Lennox Lewis too but I guess he was simply straight forward. I don't remember the fight but the conversation went something like this.

Lampely: Why doesn't fighter A do (whatever his self perceived brilliant insight was).

Lewis: Fighter B keeps hitting him.

 

Lewis annoyed me for some reason, his voice never sat well with me.:huh

I remember a boring HW Ref stoppage, (may of been Maskaev) and even the crowd is hardly making a noise, and Lennox bellows 'AND IT IS OVEOERRRRRR!'

eh ****en wrestlers, mma fans, and boxing fans alike are always bitching about commentating i could careless, Larry was damn Awesome, alil slow [long gaps and ****] on the post fight interviews but still more than do-able during fight time, we all get old and alil out of touch, Larry is one of the ones [out of who knows how many] commentators who challenge and dont kiss ass unless hes rooting for a particular fav which he's obviously forgiven for, always loved Larry and if he does go i only have Great Memories of this guy..

I've always thought that would be an ideal team. Lampley has his WTF moments but his voice is such a staple of HBO boxing that I'd definitely miss him, plus he does a descent job most of the time and it very passionate.

 

IMO RJJ is much better then Lewis

 

He did come off challenging and biased, but professionally that's not cool either too...

His lengthy dramatic pauses to "gather his wittiness" sometimes failed, no... FLAILED, and was rather laughable, especially when it was non-sensical or not quite relateable. Eventually that gets annoying to hear. And when you're the main commentator, that's bad news...

 

i agree. Lamply's voice IS HBO boxing... kinda like when you hear Buffer announcing, you know its a bigger fight

Teddy Atlas has forgot more about boxing than Merchant has ever known. At least Merchant is enteraining though. Lampley is a cheerleader that cries when his fighter loses, he is such a *****.

 

No doubt about it. Jones was absolutely stellar this past weekend. He's become less of an egomaniac of late, and you don't hear him inject stories of his own greatness into the mix.

 

Ive been dreading this day. Funny, daring and spoke his mind, there will never be another Larry Merchant in boxing. No amount of stiff, corporate, yes men will ever fill his shoes.
Another nail in boxings casket.
