Price vs Thompson confirmed for February

I've seen Johnson criticised for just turning up for a payday against Fury.

What was everyone expecting?!? Johnson is diabolical.

 

It's a similar step-up to fury-johnson, i think price wins handily thompson has less left in the tank than kingpin but he may show some ambition at least and be dangerous for a few rounds...

 

yeah he started by fighting sexton then fraudley then old man skelton, he is makin the same sort of progress as my woolworths shares

 

Pointless fight. Price will bomb him out early and it will be of no benefit to him. He needs to take a fight with a tough journeyman who can take him to the later rounds. Hes getting no experience taking these fights and will end up being exposed when he steps up.

 

Very good fight and a big step up for Price, will be very impressive if he bombs Thompson out early, if not he gets a few rounds against a quality, albeit faded opponent. I fancy Price by KO around the 7th.

 

Errr ... the number two heavyweight is 41 years old. To dismiss Thompson's credentials due to his age is pretty stupid.

 

Wtf is this **** really though, he fought Skelton last time out and he is fighting a legit top 15 in the world heavyweight next? What more do you want.

Thompson is better than a tough journeyman.

 

Thompson has no credentials. He's beaten nobody and has clearly nothing left to offer. Rankings dont mean jack****.

was mentioned on the skysports website in an article on maloney/fury and Pricey mentioned it earlier in a 5live interview

 

So not actually confirmed, no word from thompson....Past history suggests that what Maloney says and what Maloney does are not necessarily the same.

I just re-watched the Thompson vs Wlad II fight from earlier this year.

And tbf when a fighter is due to turn 42 years old and fights as infrequently as heavyweights do, then it is only fair to judge him on his last fight.

Thompson will pose zero threat to Price I'm afraid :?

He literally offered nothing against Wlad, landed a couple of rangefinder jabs at best and just looked to stay out of harms way. His defence looked sloppy, his footwork slow and he wasn't particularly difficult to tag.

The first time Wlad knocked The Tiger down, even though he wasn't that badly stunned he looked content to stay down until the ref helped him to his feet.

That is a bad sign.

As soon as Price lands heavily and hurts him at all, then he will want no part of the fight. He is purely turning up for a pay day.

That is the huge problem putting a power punching superheavyweight in against washed up 40 year olds such Harrison, Skelton & Thompson ... as soon as they are genuinely hurt, they have no hunger or will to continue and fight.

For all their limited domestic skillsets at least McDermott and Sexton are still young and hungry (especially Big John :hey) and were happy to get up multiple times to continue to fight.

Thompson I'm sure was once a pretty capable world level operator, but now in his forties and judging him on his last fight - as you have to - there is literally nothing left in the tank.

I'm not sure bar a ranking rise (which is fair enough) quite what Price will gain or learn from fighting his 3rd consecutive fighter in their 40s. It just leaves him thoroughly underprepared for his first ever world level live opponent.
