These three staples of the 60's and 70's..how do you rate them respectively,..which one had the edge over the other two? In other words, which one of the three was the best fighter, considering all their strengths and weakness..and maybe a reference or two about how they fared against common opponents. Your opinions gentlemen!!
You could make a case for George using Ali as a common measure. He went the distance twice while both of the others got KO'd, one of them twice. You could make a case for Ringo in that he did better against Frazier than either of the other two. But I think Quarry comes out slightly ahead here, based on the overall qualty of his wins. George came up a little short against the 'names' except of course, against Jerry, and that might have been a miscalculation on Jerry's part. George was behind when he stopped Quarry. I wouldn't argue with any ranking of the three as I think they were all close. All better than 'journeyman' but none of them elite. If I had to rank them based on their careers, I'd tentatively go Quarry, Bonaveno, Chuvalo.
i'd be using frazier as my yardstick...not just because he was a common opponent, but because he was a similar (similar enough) type style to them...tough inside fighters. saying that...ringo last the distance with prime frazier where the others didnt...but he lost a heavy decision in the rematch....in the first he had frazier down....so, maybe him as best??..maybe....and he beat chuvalo so, typical to my form...i'm concluding with...i dunno really.
:goodI think I agree with everything you've said here. Bonavena outshines both Quarry and Chuvalo in his performances vs Frazier..and to an extent (maybe) vs Ali. Quarry really improved on Chuvalo vs Buster Mathis; on Bonavena vs Ron Lyle and Jimmy Ellis (he edges Chuvalo here too) and on both men vs Patterson, though I thought Floyd won both bouts with Jerry. Chuvalo, like you say, did better vs Ali than Quarry by far, and slightly better, because of never hitting the deck,, against Ali than Oscar. Bonavena outshines Jerry vs Chuvalo, it goes without saying because he had no lapses in attention like Jerry did when he caught that left from Chuvalo and decided wrongly to take count on his knee. Bet he wished that he just jumped right up after he was decked.
It's close between Jerry and Oscar for 1st place, but George comes in 3rd for sure...but not by nuch.
Also they all fought Floyd Patterson. Quarry did the best vs him but I'm not sure that that makes up for what Oscar did vs the 2 best heavyweights of the era. Chuvalo was the most Canadian of the bunch, although I would need nightcrawler to give me some perspective on that.
