Galindez at his best would decision Conteh at his best. Galindez is persistantly underrated by many as just being a crude banger. he was nothing of the sort. He had superb counterpunching ability and was clever, strong and resiliant. Plus he was stronger and more durable than Conteh. True Conteh beat Yaqui Lopez with one hand and Rossman did a number on Victor in their first bout, but remember, Galindez was not Lopez, and he was past it when rossman beat him, and he avenged that defeat. Ahumada was a test for Conteh...Galindez was superior to Jorge Ahumada and would have been able to beat the talented Mr. Conteh.
Galindez was also dissimilar by Ahumada going by your 'Galindez is not Looez' reasoning. And who in the world says Galindez is a 'crude banger'?!?
Of course, Galindez was stronger than Ahumada...and featured a bettter left hook...a harder one that is, and he could turn it on from time to time and revert to the same style he used to overwhelm Len Hutchins for the WBA crown in '74. And to answer your second question, that previously mentioned Hutchins fight and Victor's very caveman like appearance caused many back in the 70's to equate him with that savage, brawling type of style...and I know, because I was around back then. Galindez then surprised everyone, beginning with his first defense, with a new style. Counterpunching, back against the ropes, and tending to go for points rather than seeking the ko. He was a master of going the 15 round distance, and was a good ring general with endless stamina.
I still maintain that Galindez was the more proven lightheavy champ and more durable than Conteh..I liked Conteh, but I don't think he had the best chin. I see a counter shot out of the blue putting John down for a kd much like what happened to Eddie Mustafa.
I don't think Conteh displayed any chin fragility at all until late in his career against Saad Mohammad. He was on a big downward spiral outside of the ring by then.
Read Area 53s post, was going to say how much I enjoyed it but Al beat me to it.The Conteh I saw beat Les Stevens at the Albert Hall for me would beat Galindez, also the boxer who beat Finnegan Ahumada and made some good defences. At the time he was calling for Foster,I think hed have beat him.But Galindez was at the top for longer,I think, and would have beat John handily in his decline.
Galindez would be "up" for a fight of the magnitude of John Conteh, like when he was way past his peak, he got "up" for that rematch with Rossman and the old fire was back. Victor was very dangerous with his very fast counters.
I watched all of Galendez And Contehs televised bouts. Never impressed by Conteh. Not super active...never seemed to put his all into any bout. Galendez was very tricky in there, great will to win, strong and had very good power. Galendez by U decision or late stoppage.
Agreed. Hardly coasted with one hand against Lopez. Dug in to the body late on away from home against Parlov. Battered Schmidtke.
