Personally I'm not too keen on the Broner fight. It would be big money, a great opportunity and have virtually no downsides, but I would prefer to see Burns stay in Scotland and test himself against a few more 'teak tough' Ghanians who have never been stopped.

Billy, I would love to believe you, I honestly would & I started this thread with a heavy heart, as everyone knows how much I love all things scottish & boxing.

However, todays stories dont look to good, do they? Alex Morrison quoted as saying he thinks the fight is too soon for Ricky and would prefer to see him fight someone else next instead:patsch Now that isnt hearsay & bull****, thats a quote straight from the horses mouth. To say I nearly spat out my cornflakes reading that story is the mother of all understatements!

World Boxing Organisation lightweight champ Burns, 29, has been advised by his manager, Alex Morrison, to reject the first approach to face 23-year-old Broner, given the high risk nature of such a bout.
    Morrison said:
"We are not going to take the fight with Broner unless there is a lot of money involved. Ricky would need a life-changing purse – at least half-a-million pounds – but there are a lot of issues to be resolved."

Morrison added: "My own feeling that it is too soon. I want Ricky to have another fight first."

Richard Schaefer, chief executive of Broner's promoter, Golden Boy, confirmed at the weekend that he has been in discussions with counterpart Frank ******, who looks after Burns' interests, with a proposal that the fight is in Atlantic City on February 16.

Broner, the World Boxing Council champion, is due to defend against Cuban Richar Abril on that date, but Schaefer stated that Burns, from Coatbridge, is the preferred option, adding that the Scot could receive £400,000.
****** also stressed that it will be up to Burns to make the call and said: "I have spoken with Richard Schaeffer and the Broner fight is one of a number of possibilities. I will meet with Ricky next week but he will be the one to decide."

Burns was not available to comment yesterday but Morrison claimed that the 29-year-old should turn down Schaefer's initial offer.
Burns should have been in action at the weekend, on the ExCel bill promoted by ****** in London, but his fight with Jose Ocampo was called off at just four days' notice when the Filipino challenger was mysteriously withdrawn last Tuesday.

No explanation was given for Ocampo being removed from the bill after he had been drafted in as a replacement for Norfolk's Liam Walsh, injured in a car crash.
Both Burns and Morrison were unhappy at the late call-off and the fact that the champion was asked to box a meaningless 10-round international bout.
****** later announced that Burns would return to the ring at the end of January, almost certainly in Glasgow, with the 26th pencilled in as a likely date.

What the heck is going on????

Yep, this will further cement why Ricky Burns is Britain's best fighter (a gnat's pube in front of Cleverly though obviously) and lightyears ahead of Carl Froch*

I think Burns wants the fight but Frank definitely doesn't want it.

In boxing the promoter relys on the fighter to draw in the punters rather than competative match ups, good fight card, good production etc For this reason, the promoter wants to keep the gravy train going rather than have any level of credibility.

Do any of us honestly believe the Burns promotional team watch Broner dismantle fighters with frightening talent, skill and confidence and they are going to want to risk their assest against him. Pure madness if we do.

This fight only happens if the fighter pushes for it, the media pushes for it, the fans push for it and the promoter doesn't see any way to protect his fighter i.e. bull**** defence/mandatory, move up a weight class (already happened once) etc

That's complete and utter garbage. He's already in shape, and that fight would be two months away. How is it not realistic?

Let's just wait and see how this pans out before passing judgement.

The only surprising thing about this fight not happening is that people are surprised about it.

When does Ol' Fish Eyes EVER put his top guys in with genuine prime World Class fighters? Everyone knows the mess his promotional business is in, he's not about to risk sacrificing one of his best assets to another promoter's card, in the US at 5am in the morning Uk time when he could keep making money off him fighting lesser opponents and selling out arenas in Scotland.

I think you do get alot of undue stick on here and this is pretty much as close to an admission as to why the fight won't happen and who is to blame.

Its hardly a revelation though as we all pretty much knew this anyway.
Not only is it hurting Ricky's career and the boxing public's perception but he is missing out on a MASSIVE payday and some big future earnings should he win/impress the US fans and Golden Boy.

Lol @ asking for £500k! Ricky still works in JJB or wherever it is. What does he need that much for?

This is a blatant duck from his management.

If Burns were to put on a great show he could catapult himself into some massive fights, win lose or draw.

Look at what happened to Lopez when he took on Ortiz? He subsequently went on to take a beating from Canelo but now he is being lined up to fight Khan. He had the balls to step up, and not he’ll rightfully reap the rewards.

Also Jorge Silva. Ive never heard from him before but he put up a great performance against Angulo. No doubt Golden Boy will look to utilise him again in the future.

Burns literally cant lose if he fights Broner and puts on a good show.

Billy, I don't for a second doubt Ricky's heart or ambition

But from what you know is it more the case that Ricky will fight whoever F*ank gets for him ?

Or has Ricky been actively pushing for F*ank to make the Broner fight ?

Is he happy to fight whoever ? Or is he telling F*ank " make the fight, I want this fight ? "

No shame if he isn't, Pac just fights whoever Arum lines up, no arguments,

    Just interested

To be honest, Broner isn 't the only guy out there to fight. If he could command a similar purse with a lesser champ like Vasquez, I say go for it!
