Since the late 1990’s the heavyweight divison has been transformed by Eastern Eruopean boxers competing as professionals. While one can argue about the quality of the divison, the results speak for themselves. The Klitschko brothers have domianted and cleaned out the divison. Other major world title belts not held by Kltischko’s have been won by the likes of Chagaev, Povetkin, Ibragimov, Liakovich, and Valuev.

What if X-soviet boxers who never turned professional did with the backing of major promoters? How would they have done?

I’ll list a few.

Igor Vysotsky. A thunderous puncher, Vysotsky could deliver a KO blow with either hand, and from any distance. A lengthy amateur career when the rules did not include headgear, combined with his come forward style left him susceptible towards toward cuts in the later half of his career, however he defeated the great Stevenson twice ( once via KO for the count ), and beat name heavies who turned pro such as Tony Tubbs, and Greg Page.

Nikoalo Korolev. 9X soviet champion, who was active the same time Joe Louis was.


Alex Miroshnichenko. Who you ask? He actually turned professional, and quit after losing to Maskaev due to lack of opportunities. As an Amatuer Miroshnichenko KO’d both Lennox Lewis and Riddick Bowe! Some felt he was a victim of the Seoul Olympic judges as he floored Bowe twice, but lost by 2 points.
