Roberto Duran's fight with Robbie Simms is something of a hidden gem, in my opinion. There's barely any lulls in the action throughout the 10 rounds, and it was close and competitive till the very end. Despite losing, I think Duran actually came out of the fight elevated. Simms wasn't a great fighter but he was a pretty good Middleweight. Duran was right there till the very hand, landing his beautiful right hand with regularity. I must watch this fight again at some point. Very watchable.

It certainly was an interesting bout.

But early on it was a footwork bout and Larry was turning him in there. Ken was walking into punches d just couldn't get Larry to trade or sit still for him to get off his combos.

But those bodyshots definately took their toll. That huge gap in mobility was nullified and Holmes can't take that body stuff the way Ali could. Who can? But fortunately, he had youth. If that bout had been a role reversal and it was an 85 version of Holmes in there facing the 73 or 74 Norton, he's in big big trouble.

But both guys dug deep in the fight and both weathered storms to make it to the end. But going into the fight, I sure didn't think Kenny was capable of dealing with that Holmes mobility and would get outboxed easily. And that's the way it was going early but Ken Norton changed all of that and showed a lot of heart and competitive spirit to do so.

Just scored the Tony Baltazar-Howard Davis Jr. fight, and predictably enough.......scored it a draw. :D

A couple things stick out, as I'd read so much about this fight being a robbery. It wasn't. Even based on the ten-point must system it could very well have gone either way, but this was fought in New Jersey under the rounds system (a stupid way to score a fight). Based on that, I don't think there's much of a question Davis deserved the verdict. It's not his fault the scoring system was what it was, and he DID win more rounds.

I was impressed with the way Davis came back strong in the sixth after a very, very hard knockdown in round five. He showed some real mettle. Problem was, he just couldn't push Baltazar back. Tony was immensely strong and a huge banger with the left hook. Davis had to move and then stand and flurry in spots. He had to work hard in this one, and those were two very hard knockdowns Baltazar scored. I can see why people thought Baltazar should have had it go his way. His work was much more telling; pity for him the rounds system was in play.

It's a pity L.F. Thompson spent most of his career fighting in Argentina.
Would have been interesting to see him in his prime.

Really like his counter right hand on the inside.

Thompson-Paret 1,2 are very good fights.
    Especially the second one.

    Very close fights.
    Especially the second one.

Personally, I prefer Thompson's harder, cleaner shots over Paret's aggression - I thought he deserved to win the first fight.

Saldivar-Winstone 2 - epic finish by Zurdo de Oro.

What I like about Saldivar is that he could switch from D.Curry sniper mode to rough slugger mode if necessary.

    Wilfred Benitez vs Tony Chiaverini

A clinic on how to fight off the ropes. The commentary team felt Chiaverini was doing well early on, but he was pretty much getting countered to death from the opening bell to the eventual stoppage. Benitez would be perfectly content to lay on the ropes and soak up all of Chiaverini's pressure. Barely anything would land of note, and then Benitez would explode with combinations, most of which would land. As the rounds passed, Benitez was landing at a higher rate and more cleanly. Chiaverini's head was snapping back with every right hand and left hook. It was a dominant performance. Outclassed. Chiaverini was pulled out after the 8th round by corner man Angelo Dundee.

Fights like that where a guy is on the ropes from the off can throw you indeed when you see them live, it just looks wrong, fools your brain a bit.
