we know he has many flaws, has just lost to the better man but i cant help but think if he was a bit more dedicated to the sport like he used to he could have been better as could a lot of other great boxers who end up slacking in the end because it can get stale. He had the talent, his boxing iq was good but not great he knew how to adapt and weather through the storm when he fought Torres. He's a versatile fighter but i cant help but think he didnt work hard enough for his stamina and like all fighters who cash in take long breaks and only fight once or twice a year. Before the fight he looks quite chubby and out of shape in general. Even then in shape i feel like his stamina was what let him down the most. Im not sure if the stamina of his is a genetic thing or from lack of hard work. I remember in one of the 24/7's or countdowns saying if he has no music he doesn't run. Things like when talking about martinez wanting to fight him saying when boxing becomes your job and not a hobby anymore things change. He's always had a leaky defence and a bit of a shaky or average chin that looked to be like it's been deteriorating of the years. When he takes a big shot his instincts will tell him to start boxing or when he gets tired he ends up moving too much and burning himself out even more. When he gets pressured he ends up fighting off the ropes when he could do a few things to slow a guy down. discuss? :huh
we will never know what advantages margarito may or may not have had that night the ring during their first fight though we've seen some recurdding themes in his career liek stamina issues, getting on his bike when he gets in trouble, bad facial swelling, having a gay son, being beaten 2 the punch in terms of speed & lost confidence it's hard 2 say Cotto is on e of the most universally liked fighters or this generation but also one of the most didsappointing in terms of total cehivements
i would have liekd 2 see cotto vs mayweather in 2007 but that's when ***gotfeather decided 2 retire I got in a fight w/ a dude from dearborn on a shuttle bus because I said cottos would beat mayweather the dudeon the bus was a real piece of **** deadbeat dad 2 he wasn't paying child supprt so tht says a lot
IMO the term "ATG" has changed. (Or should be...) It should be based on quality & rewatch value of the fights. ^in that case Cotto is a classic.
Stamina, durability, and better defense. If he had great stamina and punch resistance, we probably wouldn't see him backpedaling and retreating as much when he got hit or buzzed. Cotto knows his limitations.
Cotto just was not up to the level of ATG. His best win was Shane just on Shane's level of fighter regardless of Shane being past his prime, he still beat him. A good win.
I think his physical dimensions, stance, and offensive mindset combine to create his limitations, specifically defensively. A highly intelligent and conditioned fighter can have his way with Cotto in my opinion (if were talking about only fellow great fighters). Stamina would be the other specific issue I would note.
Both those guys could not fight a full 12 rounds when they were fighting elite fighters. And I love those guys, they fought them all, but they could not beat the top guys which is needed to say they are great.
Cotto in his own right is already a great, was thrown to the wolves and fought his way out. He probably had one of the tougher roads to deal with. Shitty trainer, shitty management; but still managed to pull through
He can't switch from offense to defense. He's either in attack mode or he's defensive. Plus some physical attributes like his trex arms and never developing a great right cross. His defense is shoddy aswell. Very easy to hit not of headmovement tries to pick shots off with his gloves and ends up taking alot of punishment
Both fighters were ruined by illegal wraps. I thought winky wright beat vargas but he clearly was not the same after cheato trinidad ran through him with illegal wraps. Same with cotto. He was undefeated when he fought margacheato.
completely forgot about that, its because he's tries to look pretty flashy he got away with it but against higher competition he wasnt able to.
He was simply just not dedicated to the sport like he should have, plus the Marg fight took a lot out of him, followed by a Clottey and Pac when he should have been rebuilding himself. He had the tools to achieve way more, instead he made money.
