A fight between the two on the way up or for one of the vacant titles could have been 50\50 or slight edge the more experienced Galindez. Once Conteh had a fight under his belt to get used to a strong practitioner of the Argentinian countering\bull-rushing style and rhythmic approach-which came in the form of a peaked, technically improved Ahumada(not the rawer version that a young galindez had the number of in 10 rounders) i'd have favoured him to solve Victor in a gruelling fight. Problem was conteh went quickly off the rails and suffered that very unlucky hand injury so soon after that fight. There was only a very small window for a prime vs prime bout to take place.
Providing John's right hand is injury free,he outpoints Galindez in a brutal bout. Conteh was the better all round fighter.
Not at all. You keep waiting for Conteh to do something exciting but one round would lead to another.....never saw him in an exciting bout and never saw him being anything but boring.
It depends on what you like, which styles and manner of fighting. Say, I consider almost all Muhammad Ali's fights to be boring. Arturo Gatti's bouts while containing a lot of action and drama, I'm not interested to watch a second time.
Yes, if you make that distinction. But the fighter Houdini has described bears little resemblance to Conteh. 'Not giving it his all' for instance.
My late friend and I talked about this one for almost two years (late 74 into early 76) We're talking prime here. The Victor bouts posters are mentioning are Victor after having been in various wars. And Conteh late 70's wasn't anything near his earlier dominance. They should have fought summer of 75, that would have been the prime time but the WBA/WBC ruined that. Other posters have already mentioned the various scenarios and I can see both sides but... My buddy and I were ''primed'' for a closed-circuit bout summer of 75, he the John lover and me the Victor lover. It's a shame the various bodies ruined things for us fans. (
I was fan of both, wanted to see them fight so bad just seeing title of thread brings feeling back. I give very slight nod to Galindez, only cause I feel I should make a pick. It's classic example of fight that should have happened, not just cause of fighters, but it was beginning or title belt era, which has devalued sport.
