ANY version of Holmes is better than any version of Baer.

Larry was better in September 1985 against Spinks than Baer was against Braddock. In my opinion anyway. I'd be surprised if you would disagree.

That's why I said "any time they defended the title."

If we're going to compare and assess what Spinks had to beat to win the title, we compare that Holmes against other champions on the days they defended the title, not the days they won it.

so you're trying to compare old Holmes defending with other guys defending?

well basing on footage we probably have to start with Johnson.

    Johnson v Jeffries I favour.
    Willard v Dempsey I don't.
    Dempsey v gibbons I favour.
    Tunney v Dempsey I favour.
the schmelling who lost to Baer I favour (Sharkey v schmelling two was a draw a for me)
    Baer I've mentioned.
Braddock who lost louis I would favour.
Louis who beat schmelling I favour.
    war bivins I favour.
    charles/walcott from 4 fights I favour.
    Rocky v Charles I favour.
Patterson at any time I dont.
    Liston v Patterson I favour.
    Ali v liston 2 I favour.
    Frazier v ali I favour.
    Foreman v Norton I favour.
    Young v Norton I favour
    Norton v Holmes I favour.
    Holmes v shavers 2 I favour.
    Spoon obviously I favour.
Thomas v berbick I would favour.
    Berbick v Tyson I wouldn't.
    Tyson v Spinks I favour.
    Holy v foreman I favour.
    Bowe v holy I favour.
    Tyson v seldon i favour.
    Holy v moorer 2 i favour.
    Lewis v holy 2 i favour.
    Rahman v Lewis 2 i don't.
    Vitali v Williams i favour.
Wlad any time from Byrd 2 i favour.

I didn't keep a tally but i think i favour Larry to lose to the majority of defending heavyweights that night.

    :good

Some interesting picks. Like Braddock, coming off a 2-year lay-off, and all those losses on his record, I can't see beating a 1985 Holmes with his skill set. But anyhow ..

... when was Jimmy Young ever champion ?

Well Braddock dropped Louis early on and gave him a good fight before being stopped. Holmes then would have an hard time stopping the man who outboxed Baer. My main reasoning is that we know Larry lost to Spinks. I think he'd also lose to Braddock.

Well I had young beating Ali so between then and the Norton loss.

Cause it's overshadowed by his Tyson fight
