Yeah, I don't honestly think Benitez is going to stop Duran at 147lbs. I'm also not even sure if I think he'd win, I just wanted to cause a bit of a stir. Apologies. That being said, I think Benitez matches up well with Duran. People can play down his win over him all they like, but Duran came to the ring in good shape. He should have been motivated too because he didn't like Benitez and he also knew that a win would potentially get him back in the ring with Ray. I just think he was surprised how strong Benitez was at that weight.
^^ He actually trained immensely hard for that fight according to Giudice's account, and had not the slightest problem making weight. Which is depressing. :verysad
i just scored it and that's one of my favourite benitez performances. duran looked ok and was just taken apart. at 147, at his best maybe a different story but that was hardly the duran that fought leonard the third time. he just couldn't touch el radar nor slip that jab consistently. the right hands that landed though for duran showed he still had power and benitez COULD be hit
He looked beast on the night too. Even the commentary team were saying how good he looked. Of course, that alone doesn't prove a fighter is in good fighting shape, but he showed enough to suggest to me there was very little, if anything, wrong with Duran physically. Benitez was a great fighter. He looked strong at that weight. Fast too. I think a lot of credit goes to Benitez for that performance, and result. I watched the fight again this morning. I saw no point in scoring it because Duran won no more than 3 rounds all night. Dominance on the part of Benitez. Lovely jab, good speed, and I also think some of his right hands buzzed Duran. He definitely had the Panamanian's respect.
Benitez probably always had durans number. This wasn't like a Tyson -holy beat down after a 3 year stint in prison. Duran wasn't far past his best. He wasn't remotely close to winning the fight despite the scoring. Benitez was just a bad style for him.
That night Duran went beyond his limits and absolutely peaked physically and mentally for that first fight with Ray Leonard...I think he would have given such stalwarts as Griffith, Rodriguez, Armstrong, Gavilan, Napoles, Basilio...the fight of their lives.
Constantly referring back to a one off gold standard is patently unfair. The whole package or kiss reality bye bye.
this is what I mean about Duran. where does he rank because of one performance? With Pacman or Leonard you can rate a whole 2 year period. This is why I think Ray was the variable. And the fact Ray won the rematch easily.
