Better defense Whitaker or Mayweather

Some times the low budget stuff yields an superior product. As noted several times in the thread, Floyd has an incredibly basic and rigid approach by comparison. It's strict technique, and he's mastered the style in ways few could duplicate - he's also got grade A athleticism and reflexes himself - even if it would be easier to execute than Pernell's imaginative artistry (against better opposition).

 

Floyd hasn't faced the level of offensive operator Pea has for me to give him enough credit based on him getting knocked over and hit less than Pea did regardless of Floyd's less avant garde techniques.

So Pea all the way.

 

Lol another *******. Who did Pea face besides a washed up face first brawler like Chavez and a bunch of B and C guys like McGirt and Haugen? A fat, overrated Azumah Nelson? Floyd has clear wins over two Hofers as well. What's next Harada over Donaire...

 

Whitaker. And he fought a much higher level of opposition as well... As he got older and settled down on his feet, he could stand right in front of you and make you miss. With him it wasn`t about self-preservation like PBF. He had an arrogance to him when it came to defense. It was about his wanting to show his opponent how `bad` his defense truly was...

Mayweather has better defense. The compubox stats don't lie. Also, Pea's defense had fallen off a whole lot by the time he was 35, while Mayweather's hasn't.

Everyone pretty much agrees Floyd's is more grounded in fundamentals/technique and less dependent than Pea on natural gifts in addition to taking less risk (although he was a hell of an exciting fighter below 147 imo).

Did someone say floyd has more varied offense then pea? That surely must be a joke. Anyways, as far as defense goes... everything has pretty much been said. Pea had the better radar.. better ring general...more athletic.. and made you look more silly than Floyd could. Floyd has a more technical defense and is better as use hands elbows and shoulder rolls to avoid head shots.

 

agreed, sweet pea defined multi layered defense. head movement, body movement, offense as defense, prediction, and utilizing counters. pea had it all. mayweather is great to. i'm not trashing him but he simply hasn't proven the same skills against the same level of opposition that whitaker did

 

The gap between them ins't that large at all. I think Pea is the better fighter, but Floyd's defense is better.

 

That testosterone sure does wonders for a man's defensive technique.

In regards to the second i'm afraid my list is fairly stereotypical. Start with the caveat that this refers to a mans ability to defend himself from punches within a fight and not his ability to integrate this with his offense otherwise Duran or Monzon or somebody not a defensive fighter would make the list. Excluding guys who career overlapped more than a few years with Pep:

Locks: Pernell Whitaker, Floyd Mayweather Jr, Niccolino Locche

Probably: Miguel Canto, James Toney, Wilfred Benitez, Happy Lora

Guys we never talk about but might make my drunk list: Winky Wright, Mike McCallum, Sumbu Kalambay, Hilario Zapata

Guys too offensive to be on the list but could go full untouchable: Roy Jones Jr, Bernard Hopkins, James Toney, Wilfredo Gomez

Heavyweights: Jimmy Young, Chris Bird, Wladimir Klitschko

So some combination of the three guys on the top list and two of the other guys. For.the probably's: Canto was at a distinct stylistic disadvantage due to his stature that meant he sometimes got hit to much against lesser skilled guys, Toney could let himself be outworked and really couldn't shut down a guy with a high workrate, Benitez displayed the effectiveness of his radar against the highest class of boxers and made them look silly but he had lapses and several fights against lesser foes where he was all too hittable, and Lora's nickname was Happy.

So yeah... Today in order: Locche, Pea, Money, Benitez, Canto. But don't hold me to it.
