The reason? there was a brand new crop of young, hungry rising stars like Johannsen, Patterson, Cleveland Williams and Sonny Liston and Rocky didn't want none of that, he had a ¨0¨ to protect. Joe Calzaghe - retired so he wouldn't have to rematch Hopkins (as the fans demanded) after winning a controversial decission over him. He was protecting a ¨0¨ too. Ricardo ¨finito¨ Lopez - Another undefeated fighter protecting his ¨0¨, after ruling the lowest weights for a long time, and a couple of tough fights with Rosendo Alvarez (who gave him his first Draw) he decided to call it a day, he refused to fight FW champions Michael Carbajal and ¨Chiquita¨ Gonzales despite the popular demand for those fights, the fear of losing was too much to overcome. In his case, it could be said that father time scared him into retirement when he still looked unbeatable, he was 35yo And of course, this list would be incomplete without Lennox Lewis, the king of the category and protagonist of probably the most blatant case of ¨scared the **** out into retirement¨. Inaccuracies! EXAMPLE^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ THere was no "demand" for him to fight Gonzalez and Carbajal at the time of his retirement. Both of them had retired long before Lopez called it a day.
Ok I mixed up things, (Im gonna edit my post) but Finito was still critiziced a lot for refusing to test himself by going up to face Carbajal and Gonzales when they were active. They would have been the biggest names and biggest paydays of his career. Well, Lopez only cared about his zero anyway
