I would just like to know why people always bring up reasons why older fighters like Harry Greb, Sam Langford, Sugar Ray Robinson, Willie Pep etc. are better is because they had in excess of 200 fights in their careers.

I have no problem with people rating these guys higher but to use the excuse they had over 200 fights is a bit rich. Does anyone honestly think by the end of their careers these guys were better versions of themselves then they were after 50-100 fights?

70 fight SRR detroys 200 fight SRR and its a similar case with everyone else. So can someone please explain when you guys talk about prime vs prime matchups some of you bring up the reason that they had so many more fights when these guys clearly aren't prime towards the end of their careers.

It's more a case of how that same 70-fight SRR would do against 31-fight Sugar Ray Leonard (about SRL's prime). There's a vast difference in experience here. The more fights a fighter has (and against superior opposition), the better he is going to be. You master your craft by practicing it. These fighters today are a joke in comparison, with their 1-2 fights per year. They're often considered "veterans" after only 20-something fights! Whereas the old timers weren't even considered ready for a title shot until close to 50 bouts.

It's ridiculous to suggest that they would compare with the guys of the 30s and 40s, who often fought dozens of times per year.

Also a lot of those fights were exhibitions they weren't exactly 15 round title fights people like to make them out to be.

Well look at Harry Greb's record its filled with 10 round newspaper decision bouts. People talk as if these are all 15 round title fights.

He has a lot of fights that are over only 6 rounds as well.

No they don't. They talk about them is if they were what they were- 10 round fights.

And I hope you're not suggesting that these were exhibitions. That would seriously undermine your credibility on these boards. Just sayin' ;)

Yeah. Ray Leonard has them, too. And 8 rounders and 10 rounders as well. I'm not getting your point here. Just about every fighter I can think of has these.

Did Ray Leonard fight 6 rounders when he was champ did he? Well I never knew that. After they graduate past this distance fighters today dont usually go back to fighting them. Also why do you keep bringing up Leonard? Not exactly the best example with his multiple retirements. Use Hagler or Duran instead.

You're right. Fighters today sit on their butts or party for 6-8 months until their next fight. Fighters like Greb kept busy.

You're acting as if fighting a bunch of 6 rounders in between fighting 8, 10, 12 and 15 rounders somehow goes to Greb's detriment. In fact it goes to his credit.

    You have strange logic.

Count how many fights Hagler or Leonard or Floyd Mayweather had of over 6 rounds after they won their championships. Then count how many Greb did.

No contest. Harry blows them out of the water.

Yeah perhaps but you're getting away from the original topic. I'm not here to argue petty childish **** like this.

Still 70 fight Greb destroys 290 fight Greb.

I never said it was to his detriment. It would be better if guys did this today. I'm just saying people talk as if these were all big 15 round fights and it gets overlooked that most weren't.

You can put 60 fight Les Darcy on the same level as say 140 fight Greb since he was consistently fighting 20 rounders in Australia.

Out of all the stupid things I've heard on Classic I don't think anyone has ever been so silly as to say, the fighters of the past were better simply because they had more fights. For instance Alabama Kid had over 250 fights and fought and beat some top tier fighters however you'll never see him in anybodies top 10 Welters. Alot of old time fighters fought regularly because they made a living off fighting something few boxers today would be appreciate, they also fought to keep busy and because they were forced to fight or give up the title. Like Surf Bat also said the only way to get better at a certain craft is to practise it and the older timers did this by fighting.

The reason people rate will Langford and Greb etc. so highly, and rightfully so, was because they fought and beat the best fighters avaliable and not only the best in their own weight class either. Between just Langford and Greb they defeated 24 HOFers, some numerous times.

No fights last for 15 rounds today.

Even if you calculated it by total number of rounds fought, the old timers would still clean house.
