What incredible victory could your favorite(s) achieve, but at too high a cost?

I don't think Ward has the physical frame to get any heavier than 190lbs and still be effective tbh. He enters the ring at 175 now and only has a short reach (i think it's 71), but he is physically very strong. Carl Froch is on record as saying he was surprised with his physical strength on the inside, and other opponents have said so aswell.

He's a ****ing brilliant inside fighter and Wlad can't fight on the inside at all. Ward's obviously the more skilled fighter, but Wlad has a good 70lbs on natural size on him and Ward's punch resistance isn't proven. If he can hold a shot better than we think then there is a gameplan there where he could feasibly be in the fight, and we know he CAN execute a gameplan to the letter aswell as having the ability to make in-round adjustments on his own.

 

Ward could actually aim for Wlad in 2-3 years.. and he might be the one across all weights with the biggest chance at beating Wlad.

 

No Heavyweight has any more than a punchers chance vs Wlad, so i'd much rather see Ward vs Wlad than Wlad vs any active Heavyweight outside of Vitali. At least you have the unknown factor.

Ward would be more interesting to be honest.

Another VERY interesting fight would be Ward vs Haye.

 

If Ward was to move up and clean out Lightheavy, pick up a cruiser title and then step up and somehow managed to beat Wlad (remaining undefeated throughout), does that make him the GOAT? Surely he'd be close enough if he managed that?

Hopkins never wanted a K brother, but he did see something in David Haye that he felt he could exploit.

Morales vs Maidana was one that very nearly happened.

Broner vs Cotto at 147 is a very intreuging fight to me, and I'm by no means a Broner cheerleader.

 

I agree. Ward has 2, maybe 3 years to do this. Any longer and Wlad won't mean as much.

 

Martinez - Ward at 168lbs?

Martinez pulling that victory off would be great IMO. Ward holds all of the main advantages and is looking more and more impressive as the bouts tick by. I wouldn't write off Martinez completely, but Ward would be the overwhelming favourite for me.

If Martinez were to win, it would be a great victory, but it would probably be the beginning of the end for his career due to his age and wear and tear he is beginning to show.

 

It would be a great win for Martinez, but I don't think it fits the tread so well. Because the cost would be very low for Martinez. Noone would expect him to win, and Ward is not someone who punishes his opponents.

 

That's why I added Martinez's age and wear and tear. He's not a young guy. The cost is low given he would not be the favourite, but it is a very risky bout up against the much bigger Ward. We seen what Ward did to Dawson (although you have to take in to account that Dawson was not comfortable at the weight), when he puts his punches together with accuracy, he can do damage through accumulation.

In terms of career, Martinez doesn't have that many more bouts at the very top in him IMO. And given the fact that they have said that 168lbs is too much, they know how risky this sort of bout would be. If he steps up and loses to Ward, this takes bigger bouts with the likes Mayweather out of the equation (so the cost would be more than just punishment taken). And you never know in boxing, the bigger Ward could punish Martinez whose reflexes are not that great anymore.
