That's why they're two completely different boxers. Floyd doesn't have to follow JMM game plan to beat Manny.
the problem is 2 weeks ago when he was knocked out Manny stumbled on Marquez foot. I am sure a little of that is diminishing skills. Look how much faster Manny moves than he does now. This is proof that the variable was Manny's diminishing skills and not JMM who always had the same gameplan.
From a technical boxing standpoint, I actually think Manny's fundamentals have improved. He basically neutralized all of Bradley's offense with his movement and counterpunching ability, and in the first 2 rounds of the Marquez fight recently he was throwing Marquez off with some puzzling head/upper body/arm movement. Juan looked like he was having trouble getting a read on Manny and was missing him a lot more than usual. I honestly thought that Roach's plan was to have Manny box Marquez from the outside, and he was doing well following that plan, but Manny chucked that out the window when he got knocked down in the third round. Then he got much more aggressive and eager to hurt Marquez to save face from the knockdown instead of trying to continue to box. He almost got Marquez out of there being aggressive, but he also gave Marquez the openings he needed to get the KO. I think the big problem with Manny isn't so much that his technical skills have declined (like Tyson's did after he fired Rooney for instance), but that the physical gifts that made him such an offensive monster have declined. His skills actually look better in recent fights, he just still has that brawler mindset ingrained in him even though he no longer has the same physical gifts that enabled him to succeed with that style. If he realized that and tried to box more, he might have better luck going forward.
atsch Under that logic Mayweather would absolutely **** him if they ever fought. What Pacquiao brings to the table is just that: being an offensive monster. Plenty of better pure boxers out there than him. All signs point to retire. He doesn't have the eye of the tiger anymore. :bbb
I wasn't talking about him vs. Mayweather. In that respect, you are absolutely right; Pacquiao's best chance in that fight was 2009/2010, before he started aging and his physical gifts left him. Against this slower, but more powerful Marquez though? He had to box. That was working. But he didn't, and paid for it. He probably can't beat Mayweather no matter what approach he tries now though, since his boxing skills aren't/won't ever progress to the necessary level to contend with Floyd in that respect, while the decline of his physical attributes mean he's no longer the brawler he once was. In short, Brawler Manny had a chance with Floyd back in 2009/2010 (#1 reason that fight never happened.) Brawler Manny is no longer as effective now due to his physical decline, and Boxer Manny, while steadily improving and absolutely capable of beating the new Marquez, can never be good enough to box with Floyd. Manny always had a short window to catch Floyd, which Floyd successfully waited out.
