I was a protege of an immortal champion, and when I was a mere 16, I had my first pro bout, a 42 round draw...I fought a rival 60 times. Never a champion, but I became a household boxing name. Who was I ?
mb, it is Charley Goldman who in Brooklyn NY, became a protege of Terry McGovern. Goldman at the tender age of 16 had his first pro fight, a 42 round draw when the police intervened. He was a good bantamweight who fought his rival Charley Kitson SIXTY TIMES...After his career ended he became a great trainer of champions such as Al McCoy, Lou Ambers, Joey Archibald, Marty Servo, and the immortal Rocky Marciano...:good
Good question, except that Goldman lost that bout (either KO'd or the referee stopped the fight and awarded the victory to his opponent).
S, according to 2 seperate sources on June 18,1904, Charley Goldman fought his first bout age 16 against a Young Gardner. The bout went 42 rounds until the police intervened, stopping the fight and a draw was rendered....
The bout was held on June 1, 1904. Next day NY Evening World, NY Globe and Brooklyn Standard Union (three different write-ups) reported that he was stopped, although Goldman called the Globe office next morning and told them it was a draw instead.
