When he was coming through as an Amateur/Pro? Watching a Floyd Mayweather interview the other day about how he more or less handles "Sweet Pea" got me wondering about Roy when he was coming through the ranks due to that he must of gotten mentioned as the next big thing/his speed etc. So, are there any stories out there about how he sparred/trained with the big names etc and what they thought of him?
Didn't you spar with Sugar Ray Leonard when you were an amateur? When I was 17. It was fun. Did he whip you? No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. He'll tell you about it. I did very good with him. I pretty much dominated most of it. He hit me with one hook that was a good shot just to show me he still had it. My hand speed was so much more phenomenal, and he didn't expect me to be that fast. So I caught him. I started messing with him because he was retired (Leonard was training for a bout with Donny Lalonde in 1988; Jones competed in the Seoul Olympics that year). I was getting at him good. He hit me with a hook to let me know, 'I can get at you too.' So it was cool. I thought I got the best of it, but because he landed a good hook I'll call it even.
yes, other accounts of this have jones getting the best of leonard but i believe it was one round of sparring and leonard was in one of his semi-retirements. still cool these two shared the ring at one point.
He has an interview in which he says he competed evenly with Whitaker, was able to thoroughly outbox Randall (but kept it even since he liked him and they'd been hanging out), when he was just a young man.
