Sergio should come down to 154 to fight Trout. Trout isn't yet a household name, but his win over Cotto lifts his profile. If Sergio beats Trout, perhaps then a big money fight against Canelo.
Yes Dempsey was a good Middleweight the first true legend of the division but has since been eclipsed by the greats who've come after. From Fitzsimmons, to Ketchel, to Zale, Robinson, And then to the Truely elite greats Monzon and Hagler. As you yourself insinuated with the evolution of the sport what it takes to be great has changed. And to bad for Martinez but he is fighting in this era. In my oppion, if he did what you said he would still need four more defenses against the top of the division to be considered truly great. But I can see where you're coming from.
He beat a prime Williams and despite the fact Pavlik was not at his best Kelly was STILL the favorite because what?... Sergio was too SMALL of a middleweight to beat Pavlik. Sergio is smart, could be a tactic to lure the popular fighters like Canelo and Floyd to face him. At least Canelo has mentioned him Floyd is terrorized by El Sexo Martinez.
Murray Canelo Mayweather Pleeeease let these be his last fights! Anyways, the writing has been on the wall for awhile now.... I hope he doesnt come under-prepared or without a certain spark in any of these upcoming fights.
It is time people went back and appreciated sergio and Paul Williams as the two most avoided 147/54lbers of there era.
If he has 3 more fights, including the Murray fight, then he will fight Chavez 2 in September. His last fight might be against GGG or Quillin as HBO will be pushing for it. HBO is trying to hype up GGG and Quillin so a Martinez farewell against either one will make sense for HBO. IF Martinez loses to Chavez Jr in September, depending on the contract and TR, we might see Martinez vs Chavez Jr III in late 2013 for Martinez farewell. Martinez is not fighting Floyd or Canelo, and its not because Sergio doesn't want to, its his counterparts that would rather avoid him.
Quillin is now a Showtime fighter, plus I can see Golden Boy turning Martinez down like they did before.
One of the Mayweather's said that Martinez at 154 would be to big, **** Alvarez he hasn't done **** in order to be mentioned at the same sentence as Maravilla. That Chavez Jr. rematch is a****ing waiste of time, since he annihlated him. Hopefully Macklin suprise all of us and get rid of that midget and that no-needed rematch.
The problem is DiBella will make the Macklin rematch then to keep things in-house. It seems like there will inevitably be an undesirable rematch in the works one way or the other.
You are right, I forgot about that. But then there is always GGG whom HBO is trying to hype up. And quite possibly it will play out like I said, assuming Martinez does beat Chavez JR in the rematch. My ideal 2 last matches for Martinez will be Canelo and Mayweather but that won't happen. And you also make a good point, IF and only IF, JR does in fact fight Macklin in May and Macklin were to beat JR. then DiBella can have and more than likely will have Martinez/Macklin 2 in mid of next year. Leaving still Martinez with one more fight left with HBO. Either way, Macklin or Jr, I think are a waste of time for Martinez. He beat them both convincely.
