Today more and more sponsors take up most of the real estate on a fighters trunks. Watching the marquez pacquiao fight I couldnt help but notice a huge TECATE logo on marquez trunks and Pacquiao had Nike, motolite, ricoa all over his trunks. It bothers me, it may not be a big deal to some but for me Iron Mike who came out with all black was intimidating and had an old school look about it. It was unique to his persona "In the solid black trunks..." Usually in the 50's there would be 1 fighter with black trunks with white trim and the other with white trunks and black trim. It seems like such a sell out. Makes them look more like those MMA fighters with so many sponsors on their trunks they might as well be in nascar. Am I crazy? or does this bother other people too? so much emphasis on $$$ and commercial product placement

I know what you mean. The ads don't bug me that much, especially since they do make extra money. What really irks me are the sequins and pits of fringe some fighters where.

Somehow I can't imagine Tony Zale or Sugar Ray Robinson fighting with fringe on their trunks.

How times have changed. When Alan Minter had DAF trunks emblazoned on the front of his trunks for the Sibson fight the BBC pulled the plug on the live broadcast and refused to show the fight.

Yeah that too, its too much. Gamboa had some pretty flamboyant trunks on too on the undercard. that go down to his shinbones...

I yearn for the golden age, Ricky, when one fighter wore white trunks 'n the other black; 'n there were no Cirque du Soleil entrances. It didn't lessen the electricity or drama when two great fighters met center ring at the ol' Madison Square Garden.

Completely agree with you, could you imagine Zale fighting with sequins and frills with them hanging down past his knees... :-(

I dont mind what Pacquiao or Marquez were wearing that much but when fighters have frills and everything it just looks ridiculous, if they wore frills and actually fought eachother then it might not bother people but they don't even fight eachother anymore they just do the bare minimum to scrape by while looking like they were in some foreign fashion show competition for coolest pants prize it's just annoying as hell. >> I mean come on

It's not just boxing; it's all sports. If the look of boxing resembled MMA because of advertising, then surely removing all advertising on the trunks would make it resemble a WWE wrestler who has no advertising on their ring attires.

I think the advertising space sold on Julian Francis soles for the Tyson fight was a little ahead for the times and we'll be seeing that soon.
