How much did Floyd Decline Since the Ortiz fight?

I was watching the Fight with Ortiz and Cotto earlier and I noticed Floyd looked so much sharper in the fight with Ortiz. He seemed more slender less stiff and more thin. He was even faster and and cautious. He took his time and got sharper deeper into the fight although it only lasted 4 rounds. In the Cotto fight, he seemed very sluggish, bulkier and wanted to trade more. He wouldn't duck or slip punches as fast, although he still was displaying some very fast combos with heavier gloves. Now before any of you say something like "well Mayweather is getting older and it's just natural for him to slow down" I want ask why do we slow down as we get older. Is the junk food finally starting to get too him, or maybe could it be that him knowing he had to go to Prison soon effected his training and performance. Now Although he's turning 36 early next year, I believe this can reversible. I believe being the athlete he is can train his reflexes better.

well he went up in weight for one, cotto was a harder stylistic matchup he was feinting throwing floyd off. He did not want to trade more, miguel cut off the ring and i dont believe floyd has had the movement he had before anyway.

He's getting old nothing stops father time.

I think FLoyd himself looked better against Cotto because of the affect of having 2 camps back to back and him starting to incorporate yoga into his workout which made him appear looser and less stiff vs Cotto. I think Cotto just that much better than Ortiz as well as the weight of Floyd himself and the glove size.

But don't get me wrong, I'm still very worried about how he's going to look in May

First off Floyd went to 154, and from the Oscar fight,he didn't look too good there.

Then the 10 oz. gloves are exactly what Cotto wanted. Better guard for Cotto and slower Mayweather.

Cotto also is stylistically better for Mayweather than Ortiz, plus Cotto is a step up in competition from Ortiz.

Another aspect that people tend to forget about is that Mayweather had a cold 1-2 weeks before the fight. He also couldn't spar the last 2 weeks because of a wrist injury he had.

Either way, he's getting old and if he doesn't hang it up soon, he will lose his zero.

Too true...longer any fighter hangs around, the closer they get to loss...unless they are named Bernard Hopkins.

    He'll be fine.

The only thing I'm worried about is that he won't end up fighting in September after all.

It makes sense for him at this stage. Can you imagine if he waited on the second fight until May or September 2014? After Cinco de Mayo, he should be in phenomenal shape for the mentioned September 14th date. Needs to get it while he can and before time's up.

On otherhand, it must be hilarious to see your demeanor on the day of fights - you worry too much. :D

To be honest I thought this too when watching the fight and I just never said anything on it.... I was surprised how much worse Mayweather appeared to me in the Cotto fight then the Victor one.

Now, it cant be overlooked that Cotto had something to do with that. But just taking Cotto out of the equation, Mayweather himself didnt look as sharp as he did in the Ortiz fight, to me.

I think deep down, just imo, but Mayweather took Cotto a little lightly.

I hope its that, otherwise Mayweathers inactivity and age are making him decline alarmingly fast.

It would still be shocking if somehow he were to get KTFO by somebody. Hard to imagine anybody beating his ass in the ring, I still favor him against everyone 154 and below, though.

I think it just came down to Floyd's gameplan. I don't know if his camp thought that he'd have an easy time fighting a toe to toe fight or if his legs can't carry him through an energetic 154 fight, but they obviously wanted Floyd to box strong right in front of Cotto. If Floyd boxed in his usual safety first style I think it would've been a Marquez style masterclass. Cotto has world class timing, though, so he's one of the only ones who can land on Floyd like he did.

    Not much......

Some credit should be given to Cotto, who didn't do all that bad.

Floyd's move up in weight to weigh about the same as normal against another guy who's more a welter than a light middle had little to do with anything. Cotto being simply a much, much better fighter than Ortiz had 90+ percent to do with the difference, I'd have to say.

I blame Mayweather's leather shorts. That was clearly the difference.
