David Price is ESPN's Prospect of the Year

Surprised to see him picked out as prospect of the year. He's an exciting prospect no doubt with his size and seemingly brutal power. But he's faced nobody who's even remotely decent yet.

He has the offensive tools but I have seen nothing to suggest he has any kind of solid defence against an opponent who has any kind of offensive ability. He reminds me of a young Wlad and just like Wlad if he keeps leaving himself wide open and not using his jab to control the range he will be upset before he ever gets a title shot.

 

I thought I read somewhere that Bermane Stiverne whipped both Price and Helinius on the same day. Too bad the Canadian's management team is shite. He should be wearing a world title belt by now, instead of waiting around to fight Chris Arreola.

People keep comparing to a young wlad!
That's a huge compliment to any heavyweight in the game.
If price has anywhere neater the success of wlad I think that's a great achievement.

 

Would be nice to see Price fight one of those guys but he won't. BTW, look at Dan Rafael's past Prospects of the year the Majority of them were KOed not even a year later. He sucks at making picks like that.

Being compared to a young Wlad is not the much of a compliment. Young Wlad was getting beaten by journeymen like Purrity and fringe contenders like Sanders.

Wlad has vastly improved since those early days. I was never sold on young Wlad always thought Vitali looked like the better pro when they were both prospects and contenders.

Price is less talented than Wlad and has worse technique but he has power and a nice variety of shots which is reminiscent of a young Wlad. But just like Wlad back then he's still very amateurish. He is jittery and is not economical with his movements. His guard is too low and he leaves himself too open to counters. He has also shown nothing in regards to an inside game, even if that's just to grab and clinch.

Just like Wlad he will need to make some drastic improvements before he can be regarded as a genuine contender. His power has made him look impressive but prior to the big punch landing he has tended to look rather ordinary.

 

The comparison is not the style of fight but the way he reacts to getting hit. Like Wlad he gets that look of shear terror and flops all over the place while trying to get away from danger.

 

He's top 2 HW's to look out for imo. He would kill Tyson Fury if they fought. Fury's glass jaw would be shattered into a million pieces, sure Price has been wobbled and hurt in the ams but he beat Fury and in the pros Fury has been dropped hard by a featherfisted journeyman with who punches like a HW Malignaggi with only 20% KO rate add to the fact that Fury's sloppy, slower and doesn't hit half as hard and you've got almost a sure thign KO for Price if they fight.

 

Deontay Wilder has twice Price's record.Why aint he ESPN's prospect of the year :rofl

 

I think Price has the best shot at a title, of all the current prospects including Wilder.

He has size, power in both hands, speed, serious ring attitude, & he has "pretty good" ring smarts.

The big problem I see with Price is: Every time he throws that great left hook of his (he practically uses it as a jab) he drops his right. Helenius, on a good night, would knock him into Tuesday. A great southpaw would also give him trouble. He could also use better defensive footwork, though his head movement is good, and that can be enough for a tall fighter with a decent reach.

If he fixes these technical flaws, which is conceivable, then he'll be a total package.
