Looks like David Tua is attempting another comeback. I dont really give him much of a chance. He is 40 now and way past his prime. He has the right trainer in Lee Parore to get him into good physical condition but he blew his last comeback attempt when I felt he actually had a decent shot at least contending for a belt. He has been in financial trouble for years now and this will be the reason he is coming back ala Joe Louis. http://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/other-s...id-Tua-rematch What do you make of his chances?
If he gets in shape he can be very successful against fourth-rate opposition. He has the power to KO ordinary part-time fighters and washed-up palookas, maybe some local bums and rugby players. Preferably stationary targets. He can take his act on the road, make some good money, maybe win a regional title. He has the style to attract some crowds and get TV coverage, even as an old man. But that's it. He's about 10 years removed from his days as a credible contender. Any contender or fringe contender would outbox him now, and probably some complete unknowns too.
He'll bowl over some no-names, but he dosen't have it anymore to compete with the top 10, as lousy as it is. He's just setting himself up for some beatings. It's a shame, because he looked sooo damned good in destroying Ruiz and Moorer. If only he had stayed on fire like that.
Yeah I was one of his biggest fans but I pretty much agree with your assessment. I think if he gets into condition, and he has a very good trainer at the moment, I think he can give Cameron trouble but Cameron himself is an extremely limited and pretty mediocre fighter.
There were murmurs about it yeah but I dont think it was ever serious talk. He had an octagon built in his training gym I believe but it was always his intention to return to boxing. The problem there is he has left his run too late. He needs the money though, thats what this is all about.
Tua's punch resistance is what concerns me..I don't think he has that rock of a chin anymore, what with Rahman and Barrett being able to deck him. Rahman I could understand, but Monte Barrett????
Yeah that worried me too actually, I can't believe 39 year old Monte Barrett knocked him down, it wasn't even that great a shot that knocked him down. In Tua's defense he was totally gassed, had a shoulder injury and was not in great shape going into that fight which has almost always been an issue with him. Still, that shot Barrett dropped him with wouldn't have even rocked him 10-15 years ago.
Signs of increased vulnerability and old age. Declining punch resistance is a death sentence for him with his style.
