If Vitali retires and Wlad beats Povetkin, will everybody be satisfied? To me that would be enough without doubt but I fear some people will say that the WBC belt is the important one.

Tommy Burns won the vacant lineage from Marvin Hart.

Floyd Patterson won the vacant lineage from one of the oldest forms of Archie Moore.

I believe Wladimir's lineage is legit, even if Ruslan Chagaev is not quality enough in the grand scheme of the division and the history of a lineal title. At the time, he was the best non-Klitschko.

I was just about to write that.

    It's the Klitscho lineage.

That's because the linear title has ceased to be meaningful to all except the stubborn curmudgeons who claim to be boxing purists. In a nutshell, the linear title is a concrete method by which to determine who is the "best." The linear title is the idea that the current champion defeated the former champion who defeated the former champion, et cetera, et cetera, tracing its way all the back to the first recognized boxing champion. Although this historically is emphasized for the heavyweight champion, it can be used in any division. Like any good scientific theory, though, it comes with a set of assumptions:

    1. The champion does not retire (or die) while still recognized as champion.
    Example: Marciano
    2. The champion does not avoid any top contenders who might deserve a crack at the title.
    Example: Johnson
    3. The champion does not leave the sport while still recognized as champion and then return later on.
    Example: Ali
    4. All boxing matches are concluded decisively, i.e. no robberies or "bad decisions.
    Example: Foreman-Schultz, Briggs-Foreman

When any of these assumptions break down (which is frequently) people invent all sorts of methods to determine the new "linear" champion, which by definition of linearity is not only preposterous, but impossible. Methods such as #1 vs. #2 or unifying the WBA, WBC, IBF, and WBO make sense to establish a champion, but not someone who is "linear." Furthermore, due to #'s 2 and 4, the linear title could be held by someone who is not considered the best. It would be best then for everybody to drop the nonsense of the linear title.

Great post. The linear title is an ideal concept out of place in a less than ideal climate.

if Vitaly won against Lewis he would have lineal title, but since he lost Wladimir established his own lineage.

It'd be easier if that Vitali clown quit ducking him. (or had never come back)

    Wlad is lineal champ.

You guys are so dumb. Vitali retired,Wlad picked up the lineal title. Hence the Ring belt.
