T, My dad and I in our wildest dreams never entertained the thought that Cassius Clay prancing around the ring whilst Tony Madigan forced the action, would ever amount to much. Well we were wrong alongst with the rest of the audience...
What were the best fights you've seen live Burt? i remember you talking about the FOTC that must of been incredible to see live
T how can I answer that ? Like asking what was your best meal ? The FOTC in 1971 was an evening I CAN NEVER FORGET...What electricity in the air, before the bout and of course during the fight...A Digitalis night for sure... The night of May9, 1945 when a young grenade throwing tough guy named Rocky Graziano, was a huge underdog against a savage young puncher from Philly named Billy Arnold who was aptly called "the new Joe Louis", took a savage beating in the first round and in the second roung and the referee was about to stop the bout ,when Rocky threw his right hand bazooka which hurt Arnold badly and in the 3rd round Graziano tore Arnold apart stopping him and ruining his career, whilst Rocky Graziano became the biggest drawing card in boxing... And the night in 1951 at the old Polo Grounds in New York where we saw Ray Robinson in his second bout with the sturdy Randy Turpin, cut badly on his eye and the referee checking Ray's eye and on the verge oif stopping the fight in the 9th round. In the 10th round Ray Robinson went all out and unleashed a tremendous do or die barrage on Turpin's chin stopping the brave Turpin who went downhill after that bout. I vividly remember Ray Robinson being lifted off the floor by his handlers as they went down the aisle towards his dressing room. I had an aisle seat and as they passed me Robinson looked so exhausted and drained and on the verge of collapse... What a night that was T...And my friend and I sat about 10 rows behind General Douglas MacArthur and his aids...Yep, I night to remember... So,so, many more great moments of the past...Cheers T.
