I was looking over his record and saw that in 1977 versus Melvin Dennis the location is "Correctional Facility Prison, Marion, Ohio, USA". Perhaps Dennis was a former inmate who learned to box in prison and a card was held there?

Qawi vs James Scott was a WBC title eliminator and took place at Rahway State Prison in NJ where both guys were inmates and learned to box. That's the only instance i know of a pro bout taking place in prison. Thought it was odd, anyone have any information about the Benitez fight, know of any other pro bouts held in prison, or have general knowledge about this sort of thing?

I have this fight on DVD somewhere, it was part of a ESPN or NBC tournament to find a champion of America or something, I think this may have been a quarter or a semi final. I cant remember why the fight was in a prison, I dont recall there being a specific reason really

I thought one of the prison fights featured Dwight Qawi?

There are plenty of boxing fans in prison. Their difficultly of course is attending fights. Other than amongst themselves of course.

In Australia, pro boxers used to visit prisons and put the inmates through sparring sessions. Helped get rid of some of their built-up nervous energy and frustration.

    Is it just me wondering??
Posters here with 5-10.000 posts knows nothing about the James Scott fights in Rahway State Prison. I am from far, far away Denmark and I know about those fights. (How many post have I written over the last 5-7 years.) 100 - 150?

HBO televised Gregory (before he changed his name to Mustafa Muhammad) against Scott at Rahway in what was supposed to be a novelty -- Scott had showed some promise as a prospect pre-prison and Rahway had a boxing program. He had one or two fights before Gregory fought him.

When Scott upset Gregory and became a real contender, NBC picked up on him and promoted him against several top guys, including Yaqui Lopez and Richie Kates, moving Scott up to I think No. 2 in the WBA or WBC rankings.

There was talk of getting Scott some kind of furlough to fight for the title in Atlantic City but the prison board or whoever makes such determinations shut that down. The governing bodies wouldn't make Scott the mandatory challenger because they determined it unfair to make a champion have to defend his title in prison on the other guy's turf in such an unfair environment to the champs.

With NBC throwing out big bucks, however, some top guys were willing to take the money to go to Rahway. Jerry "The Bull" Martin is the one who ended Scott's run, knocking him down twice and winning a hard-fought but one-sided decision. Qawi came in after that and dominated Scott, ending his career -- with Scott no longer a contender of any sort, NBC lost interest and thus went the money that enticed guys to venture behind the walls to fight him.

I didn't know about the Benitez bout and would be interested to learn more.
