Who would you rate higher between these two, and who would win if they fought in their primes and how/why???? Outside question would you give Benny Bass a shot at beating either one of them? and stylistically which one might he match up best against????
I pick Lew Tendler over Bob Montgomery because Lew Tendler was a southpaw and was more consistent than Bob Montgomery who I saw against Beau Jack, and flattened by Bummy Davis in 1 round. Benny Bass was a sawed off Hercules ,but truly a featherweight...
Well if Bummy Davis could ko Montgomery in one round with devastating left hooks anything is possible, but though Lew Tendler was so much a better fighter than Davis ,I have Tendler winning a decision over the Philly Bobcat Montgomery....
Too bad we have only film of the great "Bennah" against the best southpaw Lew Tendler...Leonard was a lightweight edition of the later welterweight Ray Robinson. Leonard as "King of the lightweights" kod 69 opponents out of 212 bouts, and it was said by many, he "carried" many opponents so he could fight them again for a lucrative amount of money. Leonard defeated the best lightweight roster of opponents as Lew Tendler, Freddie Welsh, Johnny Kilbane, Johnny Dundee, Charley White, bullish Rocky Kansas, Richie Mitchell, Ever Hammer,Joe Welling, Leo Johnson from Harlem who foolishly mussed up Leonard's hair after shaking hands. Leonard not amused, flattened Johnson in the very first round. The greatest thinking fighter, who mentored Gene tunney for Tunney's rematch with Greb. So to your question H I ?. I Have him at the very top of the lightweights, alongst Gans, Duran, Canzoneri,Williams etc. He was King of the lightweights IMO...
