    Once the champ faces a mandatory challanger, is it possible to line up a few title defenses against sacrificial-lamb type journeymen until the sanctioning body determines his next mandatory?

    A top level fighter might be able to get away with one such voluntary defense, but not without taking criticism. If they did more than that, they'd be torn apart by all the self-appointed critics on websites like this one.

    Off the top of your head, let's say within the last 20 years, who has had them most title fights in one year?
    Oscar had 5 in one year, that's pretty busy. Anyone trump that number recently?

    Technically, yes they can. Mandatory defenses are the only fights they literally have to take. Other than that, titlists can fight whoever they want.

    They'll lose credibility in the public eye if they do it, but theres no rule that says they can't get away with it.
