Not a knock on Ray Leonard, but this man retired/went on more vacations than FMJ

The difference is he didn't retire in order to duck tough fights. He fought the best of his era, and won. It's not the retirements that people **** on Floyd for, it's the ducking of fighters. Ray also had a legitimate excuse for retiring , what was Floyd's excuse for the 100 vacations / retirements he took in the prime of his career?

If Leonard had never fought again after 1982, nobody could've blamed him for it. Each time he did it was a calculated risk. People tend to focus solely on the first part, though. He basically cleaned out the welterweight division before he even got a title shot, then took out Benitez (38-0), Duran (72-1), Kalule (36-0) at LMW and Hearns (32-0). Three ATGs and fourth Ring/Lineal Champ in a higher division with a combined record of 178-1-1. In a span of 22 months.

Ray was a polite interview and a gentleman in and out of the ring. I think Ray was quite a bit more popular than PBF. People had some grumblings about the retirement thing, from what I remember, but most people understood how serious the detached retina was and how likely it was to reoccur with too many more fights. If the fans had to choose occasional Ray Leonard to no Ray Leonard they would have chosen what they got.
