We all know the stories of Patterson being scared before the fight...that could have been due to many things..Liston's rep, his look, the way he had won fights, the aura he had, finally I think the fact that Cus was clearly worried about facing him might have had a big effect. My little bit of boxing taught me that nothing will make you more nervous about a fight is knowing your trainer is nervous.

So if Patterson could have been mentally focused, ready, could he have won? Or at least made a better fight of it. Or would Liston have been a horrible match up and scored first Round KO's no matter what (I have to believe Patterson could have done better at least).:think

Patterson could have done whatever he wanted the night, he still gets knocked out in the first round.

Liston proved in the rematch it weren't a fluke.

D'Amato was never really Patterson's trainer. That was November. Furthermore, by the time of the McNeely fight he was person non grata in the Patterson camp, keeping in touch by phone twice a week. Patterson only spoke to him now and again.

So it's unlikely his negative attitude - hypocritically born of his disdain for Liston's ICC and gangster connections more than genuine fear of Liston IMO - affected Floyd that much.

Floyd was a ***** fellow. Nice guy I think. But he refused to look into the Swede's eyes before their second fight. He brought a disguise for that fight too. It was arguably his best performance and the one for which he was most mentally prepared.

Patterson was a professional fighter whose fight with Liston came about due almost entirely to his own desire to fight him.

I don't think his being intimidated was anything like the factor that people try to paint. He continued to chase a third fight with Liston, in earnest, right up until Ali KO1.

His leaky defence and his weak chin were the causes of his troubles with Liston.

Patterson said he wanted to fight him and beat him at his own game, he said he should of boxed him, either way i see it going worse if he boxed him...

I have also read something along these lines - Patterson saying he regretted trying to be too aggressive in the Liston rematch.

"But worse? How could it go any worse..."

Well seeing that if he tried to box he would be at a big disadvantage because do you really see Floyd outjabbing Liston... or if he did actually slip past and get to him Liston would just use his strength to get him back off and land a long range right i believe, so no it's not dumb i see Floyd landing less if he boxed him and Floyd landing less and then getting knocked out is obviously alot worse than fighting him and landing some shots...

Liston was too big, too skilled, too strong, too fast (despite not being very fast, he was fast enough to do the job)

    True.
His trainer said they had to keep feeding him loads to keep him from dropping back to middleweight.

I think the gangster had the gentleman's number, though trying to box, I feel, would have worked in Patterson's favor. Very, very quick hands... would have done well to wrk on defense, though.

Just because it lasts longer dosen't mean it will go better, Floyd would look worse trying to get to him and then when he gets close enough gets hit hard and has to back up or keep going in either way getting knocked out again, how can you not see use your head, atleast the way Floyd fought him let him get some shots in

If he boxed him he lands way way less and then still gets knocked out
