Even when Pac beat Barrera in '03 (which is the best single win between the two), it didn't give Pacquiao a better resume/legacy than Mayweather.

Ranking their best wins by 2003:
    Pacquiao over Barrera
    Mayweather over Corrales
    Mayweather over Castillo II
    Mayweather over Genaro
    Pacquiao over Sasakul
    Pacquiao over Ledwaba
    Mayweather over Chavez
    Mayweather over Manfredy
    Mayweather over Hernandez
    Mayweather over Gerena
    Mayweather over Ndou
    Mayweather over Juuko
    Pacquiao over Hussein

I mean, does anyone disagree with that? How much weight does one win carry? Not to mention Pacquiao's couple defeats, foul-fest draw with Agapito, and tasting canvas many times in that same span. I really believe Pacquiao has never ever had a better resume than Mayweather. And I've been discouraged by ESB's bias over the past several years anytime this is discussed.

Quite a bit. Wish Floyd had one comparable.

    Mosley, #1 WW and P4P #3

    Barrera #1 FW and P4P #3

Not exactly 50/50, but it was a great W for both. Pac's underdog status obviously enhances the W against MAB.

Losses should also count (Torrecampo, Morales, Marquez, etc.)

Nobody claims Jess Willard is even a top 30 HW, despite his KO26 of Jack Johnson being one of the best individual wins in the division's history.

I rank the Mosley win well below many of Floyds' other fights. Retrospect is relevant, just as Pacquiao's wins over Morales were overrated at the time and he did not deserve 2006 Fighter of the Year at all for them. The Morales trilogy hurts Pacquiao's legacy when being touted as a top 30 fighter of all time.

    ---

People choose their criteria to match who they want to pick.

If it's just names and quantity and nothing else matters, Pacquiao.

If it's results and performances, I've always thought it's clearly Mayweather.

Yeah, well Jess Willard didn't have the skills, ability, consistency or body of work that Pacquiao does underneath it either. Neither did Buster Douglas or Hasim Rahman or whoever. That's why their "best win" doesn't give them similar separation.

We're in agreement with Morales. retrospect is relevant but so is perception when it comes to these things. Everyone was saying Floyd would never sign to fight Mosley, that Mosley was too big and strong and could KO Floyd, and Shane damn near did for half a second.

Mosley is clearly Mayweather's best scalp IMO barring Corrales. Castillo is an underrated win IMO and it probably won't ever get it's due, even though Castillo should have been P4P at the time with his brutal KO of Bazan and his W over P4P ranked Johnston.

Corrales over Mosley, G -- Regardless of whatever numerical ranking they happened to have in that particular climate of the game. And I made a whole damn thread in honor of Floyd regarding that... Surprised you never posted in it. :-(

I dont think anyone can have them too far apart tbh.

It's genuinely arguable at this point but both belong in the same tier.

In Pac's prime years he probably picked up the better victories but he also lost a few times depending on how you score fights. Yeah he was drained for singsurat but Morales and jmm outboxed him 4 times on my cards. No shame in losing to greats though. He's clearly slipped now so I don't hold the last two jmm losses against him. However Floyd is still going strong and is still the number 1 in the world. He will hold onto that for probably another 2 years.

Basically Floyd can still build his legacy but Pac is pretty much done.

I reckon Floyd will be remembered as the best fighter of his era if not the greatest.

It's interesting coz when pac cut through Diaz, Hoya, Hatton, cotto and clottey I thought he was gonna pull well clear but then his momentum just stopped and Floyd carried on doing what he's doing.

Either way the point is it's debatable. Not sure who I have ahead. I do know that prime for prime I pick Floyd to win.

True. Corrales looked devastating and Floyd wasn't looking too hot with those injuries.

Even RING back in 2000 wrote "Floyd Who?" after Chico beat the living hell out of Manfredy and bumped him ahead of Floyd at 130.

Ah, the Manfredy fight.. reminds of a time when I actually cheered for Floyd. I hated Manfredy so much, and Floyd iced that piece of trash really nicely.

Shane Mosley being ranked #3 P4P heading into his fight with Mayweather is as good an example as any of just how ****ed up and untrustworthy public perception/numerical rankings can be.

Mosley was 39 years old, had been showing very clear signs of fading for about 7 or 8 years, and hadn't fought in 15 months. He was bested by Cotto years before that and struggled mightily with a shopworn Mayorga. The Margarito win was a one-off performance for him post-Forrest (way back in '02). He was not the 3rd best fighter in boxing when he fought Mayweather. He wasn't even the 10th, or even close. That win should barely crack Floyd's top 10 victories. It's more comparable to his win over Baldomir than, say, his win over Corrales. It's a solid enough win, but comparing it to Pac's thrashing of a 29 year old Barrera riding the best run of his career is laughable.

Willard's win over Johnson doesn't mean too much, btw. It's nowhere near one of the better wins in the history of the heavyweight division. Jack was pretty damn washed up by that point and he still made Willard look a fool up until his old age caught up with him in, you know, about the 20th round.
